Catching Carousel Stops: Rupp to AAA, Dalles to AA

According to Reading Fightins Director of Public Relations Eric Scarcella, the Phillies have done some reorganizing in their minor league ranks to adjust for Steven Lerud‘s promotion to the Phillies. Catcher Cameron Rupp, 24, has been promoted from Double-A Reading to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Rupp, 6’1″ and 240 lbs, has found his power stroke in 2013, hitting 8 HR for the Fightins while posting a .245/.329/.455 line in 161 PA. Rupp was ranked #23 according to our Jay Floyd in his 2013 Prospect Nation Countdown.

Filling in for Rupp at Double-A Reading is Justin Dalles. Dalles, 24, has built on an impressive defensive reputation and has hit the ball well in Single-A Lakewood (.342/.395/.737 in 43 PA with 4 HR). Dalles will likely be the back-up for Sebastian Valle, 22, who is now the default starter for the Reading Fightins after a disappointing start (.212/.256/.410 with 5 HR in 129 PA).

If it was April, I would have said Joseph and Valle would be in the Majors right now. But now we see Joseph injured, and Valle almost non exsistant as a prospect. Im sure his bad start will reverse but really a disappointment this year.

Rupp has been OK to good while Dalles has really thrived in Lakewood

Dalles is 24 and has a .647 OPS in the minors in 918 plate appearances. This year he has 4 home runs in 43 PAs in Lakewood against mostly much younger and less experienced competition. Never say never, but the odds are against him continuing his early success.

Rupp on the other hand looks like a solid bet to have a decent career as at least a major league backup. He is continuing where he left off last season, when he hit .267/.345/.424 (.769 OPS) in Clearwater.

Should have just brought Rupp up to the majors left lerud in the minors…

Doing so would have required removing someone from the 40-man roster and we all know that RAJ would not want to expose Michael Martinez to waivers.

Valle stock was dipping from last year and is continuing to drop even further down. Rupp looks like he be a back up type as Schekman predicts. He next in line after Lerud right now.

Not going to happen hogey. Rupp was in class A baseball last year. He needs more seasoning. It would have to be a extreme emergency for him to get the call up so soon. Lerud has way more experience. So does Suomi but they seem to like Lerud better.

No he cant hit but he has more experience behind the plate. That’s what they look at for 3rd stringers. The defensive side of it.

4th stringer… sometimes I think we might as well call up a younger kid see what he does and what he’s made of

Read the news that an MRI performed on Kratz’s left knee Monday revealed a medial meniscus tear that will need to be repaired surgically. Obviously not good news for the team. As I understand it, the average recovery period for this type of injury can take about 7 to 8 weeks depending on age and shape the player is in. Being a catcher, the rehabilitation may take longer.

The good news is Ruiz and Utley are close to returning sometime next week.
