Following Thursday’s acquisition of infielder John McDonald from Cleveland, the Phillies made room on their active big league roster by demoting infielder Freddy Galvis to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

McDonald, a veteran of 15 major league seasons, has a career .235 batting average and a .605 career OPS mark.  The 38-year-old posted a .053 batting average in 24 games in the bigs this year.  Primarily a shortstop, with 568 games played there, McDonald has also spent considerable time at second base (209 games) and third base (135 games) while dabbling just a tad in the outfield (six games).

Galvis  is a career .218 hitter with a .626 OPS in 112 major league contests.  The move will allow the 23-year-old Venezuelan to get more playing time with the IronPigs.

Philly.com featured the following quote from Phils manager Charlie Manuel regarding the youngster’s need for game action.

“When we evaluate him, we think he has a good chance of being a hell of a player,” Manuel said. “If he’s going to stay here and only play once a week or something like that, that ain’t enough. That’s definitely not enough.”

This is the move I expected, and it sounds pretty solid. One could wish they had obtained a better hitter, but good hitting infielders tend to be expensive.

Also, to those who thought the Phils shouldn’t have bothered with McDonald and should just have brought up Martinez again, note that Martinez actually has a worse lifetime BA. McDonald also plays better defense.

By going 2 for 38 this year. Career average is .236, and last year it was .249. But even with those more respectable averages, without much power or many walks he’ll be a terrible hitter, somewhere between Martinez and Galvis-level.

Didn’t you see the word “lifetime?” I wasn’t talking about this year, in which McDonald has had rather limited playing time.

Can play SS, 2B, & 3B. Excellent defense at each position. Late inning defense. Also gets Frandsen into games at 2B and 3B occasionally. Gets Galvis everyday ABs, which he needs.

I agree with Galvis needing more playing/development time. Dont know about this MacDonald guy. They could of just pulled Wilson out of the independent leagues probably.

Galvis does need more time… I like this move for the simple fact that at least Michael Martinez isn’t coming back up

Hogey if they got this 38 yo utility infielder that means they are way down on Mini. He’ll probably be out of the Phillies system all together by next season.

Cleveland has scouts that know what their doing, thusly it won’t be Mini.

When will Larry Greene be called up? Let’s get that big bat up here to see what he can do.

I finally figured out the phillies plan with this move,,, they are trying to empty the park, and trying to loose fans and support. They went out and found the only player in baseball worse then mini mart,, good job rube way to loose fans and interest

Phillies management had to say some kind words for Galvis without mentioning the”D” word (demotion), Simple truth be told.. he can’t hit, period. Frandsen can and deserves more playing time. McDonald was aquired for multi-position defensive purpose and to fill the 25 man roster.

I personally think the manager has lost patience and finally realized Galvis is not helping team as a benchwarmer.

Overpaid underperforming stars cause a big gap in talent.

McDonald was not brought in to bring fans in, but he will give your 2b, ss, and 3rd a night off here and there, which those guys need. And when you do so, his defense is a back flip short of Ozzie Smith. Plus he is a good clubhouse guy.
