Gameday: Mets (29-41) vs. Phillies (35-39)

New York Mets (29-41) at Philadelphia Phillies (35-39)

Dillon Gee (5-7, 4.56) vs. Jonathan Pettibone (3-3, 4.40)

TIME: 4:05, Citizens Bank Park
WEATHER: 84, sunny
MEDIA: Facebook or Twitter

After another disappointing loss last night, manager Charlie Manuel was heated in his post-game press conference.  He expressed that he doesn’t know what else he can do with his lineup, acknowledging the lack of run support.  Could these words fire up the offense?  Does it give them something to prove?  We’ll find out.

After an impressive start to his major league career, Jonathan Pettibone has struggled as of late.  In his last three starts, Pettibone is 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA.  He only lasted three innings in last start against Colorado as he allowed seven runs.  Pettibone will try to get back on track today against the Mets.

Dillon Gee, today’s starter for the Mets, has horrible career numbers against the Phillies.  He has a 7.49 ERA in 39.2 innings against Philadelphia.  It may look good on paper for the Phillies offense, but they have been so  unpredictable at times.

Lineup: SS Rollins, 2B Utley, 3B M. Young, 1B Howard, LF Brown, RF Mayberry, CF Revere, C Ruiz, P Pettibone.

If they want to avoid a sweep, it’s a must win today. I don’t see them having success against Harvey tomorrow.

I believe Howard hit two homeruns off Edgin last year, one of them to win a game in the 9th inning when the Phillies were trailing.

Just checked the play by play data and am wondering why Pettibone grounded out to end the bottom of the 6th and then was relieved in the top of the 7th. Anybody knows why?

    • Manny

      June 22, 2013 at 7:06 pm

He got injured (lower back tightness).

Serious injury or just something precautionary?

    • Tracey

      June 22, 2013 at 7:10 pm

Yeah, he would have had an easy single if he hadn’t injured himself, but he practically walked down the line. The fans booed him after he got out. He was coming out in the 7th, but they pulled him before he threw a pitch, and the fans cheered him when he left.

This no doubles defense has to lead to more runs than it prevents. By the way, why isn’t Galvis playing 3B?

  20. Manny

    June 22, 2013 at 7:18 pm

It all starts with Papelbon giving up a HR. That’s bad.

Then M Young forgets how to field and allows Wright to reach first.

Then a grounder goes past the infield for a single..but Dom Brown and Revere take forever to get to it.. and Wright scores from 1st on a SINGLE. Yea. Fundamentals.

Holy shit. Don’t know what to say about this team. It never comes easy. But FRANDSEN!!! What not to like about that guy. He always seems to get it done. Just a SOLID player!!!!!

And today’s winner: Jonathan Papelbon. Yeah, I sure like those W-L records a lot. One of the worst stats in the sport…

@Phillies fan from Germany: It started with a disasterous 7th inning after Pettibone left the game with back stiffness. Stutes came in. Started with an error on Young, then Stutes gave up a walk, hit, another walk… bases loaded for DeFratus, who gave up a double. Diekman finally managed to shut the thing down but the Mets had brought the game from 7-1 to 7-5. It -was a quiet 8th, then Pappy gave up a HR to the second batter to bring the score to 7-6. Then another error on Young got Wright on base. A fly out brought it to two outs, but Murphy got a single and Wright ran all the way, scoring from first, tying the game.

When Stutes came in I knew they had no chance.

I just wasn’t sure who “they” was.

What about Zambrano. I know he’s said he’s interested in a starter role only … well, I want to spend my weekends with Megan Fox only … so what. The MLB option should be presented to him as, “Do you want to pitch up here or not?”

“Pettibone injured himself while batting early in the game. He drew boos when he didn’t run out a weak grounder, but clearly there was something bothering him as he clutched his lower back on his way back to the dugout.”

Piss poor environment for a young player

On the contrary the fans expect hustle. They didn’t know that there was a physical problem. next time out they will embrace him.
