Phillies Acquire John McDonald from Cleveland

John McDonald - Philadelphia PhilliesChalk this move up as strange: the Phillies acquired 38-year old infielder John McDonald from Cleveland for a player to be named later or cash. It doesn’t take advanced statistics to show that McDonald has been ineffective this season. McDonald has hit just .053/.163/.079 in 43 PA and will join his third team this season.  In case you are wondering, that triple slash line is worth -0.7 fWAR, an amazing accumulation of negative value in such a short span. His -0.7 WAR to 43 PA comparison makes him literally the least valuable player per PA in the Majors this season.

The most curious part of this move: who does McDonald replace? Will the Phillies send Freddy Galvis to Triple-A to get regular at-bats? Is a Chase Utley or Michael Young trade eminent? McDonald will join the team in LA and join the 25-man roster. No corresponding move has been announced.

Hopefully Galvis gets sent down for more playing time and seasoning… it is a head scratching move but I understand it if that is what happens… now if we could only get rid of delmon young

The only logical reason for this move is to option Galvis.Galvis has only been a defensive replacement lately, and will never progress without regular at bats. McDonald doesn’t need regular at bats, so he could, indeed, be a defensive replacement for M.Young. Hopefully he never gets to attempt to hit.

If McDonald was acquired because a trade is eminent, they’d need someone better than he is; no one is stupid enough to think he could replace even Michael Martinez’s offense.

Maybe Ruben thinks the National League has a designated fielder rule and McDonald will never have to swing a bat.

Clearly makes no sense. Why wouldn’t they just bring back Martinez? Maybe something is going on that we don’t know about. Frandsen has supplanted Galvis as the utility man and that they need to send Galvis to the minors. Regarding Galvis, he has the ability to be an excellent defensive player but has made some bad plays recently that Charlie would have to be concerned about. But why would they get McDonald?

I also have a feeling that Laynce Nix’s days with the club are numbered.

Martinez isn’t really very good defensively; McDonald is. I also think that maybe they’ve finally given up on Mini (it’s about time, I might add).

Except he’s an excellent fielder, I understand, unlike Mini.

McDonald is 38, which is fairly old for a basball player. So if he gets sent to AAA, we can all sing, “Old McDonald was on the Farm…”

We don’t have a guy less useless than this in our own farm system? Why would you give up anything for this guy and why would you want him in the first place? WTF?!?
