Ruiz Activated; Utley Soon to Follow?

ruizCarlos Ruiz has been activated from the disabled list, sending Steven Lerud back to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. We haven’t seen much of Chooch this season, due to the 25-game suspension to begin the year.

In 16 games this season, Ruiz is hitting .235 with no home runs, just two RBI, and an OPS of .560. However, with Erik Kratz still weeks away from a return, he’s a better option than Humberto Quintero behind the plate. Let’s hope Chooch can find that stroke right out of the gate.

Ruben Amaro mentioned that Chase Utley could soon be heading out on a rehab assignment. But the way Chooch quickly returned, the same could hold true for Utley. Look for him to play one or two rehab games tops before rejoining the Phillies.

    Kratz would be better.

Kratz has shown some pop at the plate and is okay behind the plate but the way Chooch handles the staff and calls games I’ll take him over Kratz EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.

So i keep reading about possible people that might get traded. Lee, Papelbon, Ruiz, Rollins, Utley, Delmon Young, Mike Young, Mike Adams, Basically anyone except Ryan Howard and Cole Hamels.

For Lee and Papelbon. Is it better to look for the boat load of prospects or the true quality prospect? Who could they be looking at?

Delmon wont fetch much if anything. Adams has been struggling and been having injuries problems. Ruiz coming off suspension and injury. Im not sure what we could for him. If they traded Lee i rather them get two high prospects instead of 4 middle of the road types.

OK, lets get real. This is not a black and white issue – “blow it up” or “go for broke”. It is a question of where the Phils are in mid-July and what the offers are. Amaro is optimistic which is fine and even if he was not he has to sound like it to get the best value. If he gets the right offer he will pull the trigger. He does not appear to be under any financial pressure so he can wait and we will have to also.

I agree Bob it’s not black or white. But if you watch this team something is missing. Think back to the playoff teams in 07,08,09. They had the look of a playoff team. You don’t want to wait to long basically let the team go into the garbage. Look at the Cardinals and the Giants they have been adding and subtracting pieces on the fly and drafting and developing solid talent in the minors. If u look at all the prospects the phillies have traded in these past few years NONE of them have done anything in the majors. Something is wrong with or minor league system. There is a lack of development going on. This falls on Rubin he was given keys to a Mercedes and slowly it’s becoming a fiat. Trading some key guys is an opportunity to clear the deck a little who knows maybe with a big tv deal they can go after David Price and Gincarlo Stanton. It’s becoming obvious most big to medium market teams are getting huge tv deals and locking up key players. So development in the minors is key.

I don’t remember exactly, but I don’t think I would have said the 2007 Phils looked like a playoff team in late July when they were under .500. Or maybe even 2009 team that was only 2 over in late June. Or the 2010 Phils who were only 2 games over in late July. I am sure there was a lot of “you are what your record says you are”. And very little of “these guys sure look like a playoff team”.

Now I doubt this year’s team is capable of the same kind of surge, but I also don’t think we can be so sure.
