Report: Asche to be Called Up, Possible Young Trade? Deadline Madness!

It looks like it will be only half a season in a Phillies uniform for M. Young.

It looks like it will be only half a season in a Phillies uniform for M. Young.

Michael Young has been the topic of a plethora of trade rumors, and today, it seems as though at least one of the rumors may come true. Jeff Passan is reporting on Twitter that Cody Asche is to be called up today, and hints that this could be the first domino to fall in a Michael Young Trade.

From his Tweet:

@JeffPassan: Source: Phillies plan on calling up 3B Cody Asche. Points to Michael Young being traded today.

UPDATE: According to Joel Sherman, the Yankees are NOT the ones in on Young.

UPDATE #2: Ken Rosenthal says that Young would only accept a trade to the Rangers.

UPDATE #3: Jayson Stark says there is no deal imminent. And he doesn’t classify it as “likely”, either.

UPDATE #4: Steve Susdorf was designated for assignment. The Asche promotion could still mean Young is dealt, according to Jim Salisbury, with Matt Gelb providing an explanation.

UPDATE #5: Michael Young is in the Phillies lineup tonight. Phils fans should be on #HugWatch tonight.

In addition to the now expectation that Young will be moved, Andy Martino of the New York Daily News says that the expectation among GMs is that Cliff Lee will definitely be traded. Here’s what he said:

@MartinoNYDN: Whether Cliff Lee gets traded or not, we’ll see by tomorrow. But man, strong expectation among plugged-in rival execs he will go.

Here’s some more updates:

– Ken Rosenthal was throwing around Xander Bogaerts‘ name today, saying that the Red Sox should give him up if it means getting Lee.

– Peter Gammons says Bogaerts will NOT be traded, period.

– Joel Sherman said he was told that the Red Sox have enough pieces to make a trade for Lee without Bogaerts.

Tim Brown reports that the Red Sox are not likely to deal for Lee due to high price tag.

Buckle up, today and tomorrow are going to be wild.

Since when was Jeff Passan so clued in to the Phillies’ business? First he breaks the MAG signing, now he’s on top of this.

it would appear that he has someone inside the FO passing info to him. Sometimes they leak things purposely, and sometimes it’s just a guy that can’t keep his mouth shut.

I am definitely excited to see what Cody can bring to the team. He has been tearing it up in AAA. Sorry to see Mike go if that is truly the case, I liked him. The defense isn’t there but he’s a good team guy and a decent hitter.

    JASON GRILL…

I forget. Schneckman/Lefty where ya at?

Why did the Phils (iron pigs) ever release Jason Grill??

This is really approaching total hilarity. Roy O and Young Mike both dsay they will only go to the Rangers. Roy added the Cardinals, but when nd if Jon Daniels reads those part of rumor central, he is split a gut.

I figure Ruben has 2 things up his sleeve. If Young does et dealt to Texas, which won’t happen, it’ll be for Nelson Cruz while he’s suspended (if he is).

The other possibility is now that Asche is officially Philly bound, it’d be a classic finish to what still won’t be, but might be Ruben’s paralytic state this trade season if Mike Young is still here.
Unfortunately, Young will certainly be gone by roughly this time tomorrow.

Well, at least the day has some levity. May mainest man, Alex Jokerod said he was to be a role model. Supposedly, at least. Maybe it’s a misquote and he said he wants to roll his next model since he’s still not hip enough to get back to the Yanks.

Funny stuff Ken, but I can’t help but ask where you get the idea that the Rangers would trade Nelson Cruz for MY? Doesn’t make any sense to me. Maybe you are under the assumption that Cruz would lose that much edge off his game without the juice? It didn’t hurt Braun much when he went clean. ( if he ever did)

If Nolan Ryan had ever gotten suspended, they’d have happily traded him while he was suspended, too. Take the time frame mentioned literally.

It’s been pointed out elsewhere that it sure would be nice for Texas to know whether Cruz will be suspended this year as they decide what to do by tomorrow. Do they count on having him, or try to replace his bat? One more layer for them to navigate.

Both Peavy and Norris have been scratched for tonight. So ya kinda get the feeling that for the final day, and its important to think of the old Duane Thomas line, if it’s so final, why do we do it again in the future, Cliff stands against less competition to be moved. But will he be dealt? It’s a mixed blessing either way I’d guess no and stick to that firmly for the next quarter hour. He seems like a real good guy worthy of a good wish, and that’s that I hope he doesn’t die of boredom. Very well paid boredom, but so much in life is relative.

What was that Sunday game around mid June last year when Vic got pulled either before the game, or early, most publicly painted like he didn’t have his head into baseball that day.

Batting second, the third baseman, Mike Maybe. Cool move to see how Ruf does in the 4 spot.

    1. Jimmy Rollins (S) SS

    2. Michael Young (R) 3B

    3. Chase Utley (L) 2B

    4. Darin Ruf (R) LF

    5. Delmon Young (R) RF

    6. Kevin Frandsen (R) 1B

    7. John Mayberry (R) CF

    8. Carlos Ruiz (R) C

    9. John Lannan (L) P

And let it be said…. Delmon Young is FIRMLY entrenched on this roster and in this lineup. I know I’ll be watching for that reason alone!

That lineup sucks. Delom Young HAS to go.

Yeah, but with this season a waste at this point I think he’s here for the remaining 50+ games.

Why would Cruz be traded when he’s an FA this winter? There is no point in accepting a suspended player who wouldn’t be eligible for a single plate appearance before hits the market.

I’ve been saying it for weeks now, this team needs to sell and start a partial rebuild.. this season is a loss..

Trade Lee and young to red Sox for xander and Jackie Bradley maybe we include another if need be…

Trade Ruiz to Yankees for j.r. Murphy maybe resign him at seasons end to back up and teach our young catchers…

Trade delmon somewhere get a glazed ham for him I don’t care…

Try to trade papelbon to Detroit for rondon and either Garcia or castellanos

Then put Howard on waivers and see if someone won’t claim him…

I don’t wanna trade all of these guys but if we can get back some good talent it’s worth a shot to start a rebuild…

Hogey – Nice plan except I don’t see other teams agreeing. Reality is that no one wants these guys or their contracts.

There will be very little activity for the Phils at the trading deadline if you take RA Jr. at his word. He was on MLB Network this afternoon.

He seemed very doubtful there would be any major moves. He was asked if it was true that Michael Young would only accept a trade to Texas and no where else. He told the reporters that they had more information than he did, that he wasn’t even aware of that. He said he expected Lee and Utley to be in Phillies uniforms for a long time. And he didn’t expect to move Papelbon either.

That said, I know we can’t believe what these guys say all the time. They blow smoke because they have to for confidentiality reasons. But I have to say, he was pretty convincing.

Ruben is totally blowing smoke and is posturing like any GM would. I will be SHOCKED if at least one of Lee, M Young or Papelbon isn’t moved by sometime tomorrow.

You know Chauncey, you could go down there and bully them a little, maybe that would help ensure something gets done. 🙂

How could Ruben not be aware of Michael Young’s trade clause?
Even if he never intends to trade Michael Young, Ruben, as GM, should be aware of the stipulations in Young’s contract.
You know that has to be silly otherwise he’d be a pretty poor GM by anyone’s standards, including his own.
I agree that these fellows blow smoke sometimes for confidentiality reasons but I think they also blow smoke just to blow smoke… because!
I mean, if how much every player earns is public knowledge you’d think the rest of the contract points would be a minor thing to share.

      July 30, 2013 at 5:35 pm

I agree. I think he is aware and is blowing smoke/ not wanting to tip his hand. However, when it comes to creating, writing, and doling out contracts he’s as clueless as a blind mole trying to get dressed. His putrid contracts make it very difficult to move people, see the contracts of Psychotron and Howard. If M Young goes, let’s hope Delmon goes too!

Michael Young will be traded eventually, but let’s face it, there won’t be much of a return. The guy has a negative WAR for the second consecutive season. He’s just not a good player at this point in his career.
