Martinez, Hernandez Return to Phils

Following a pair of roster moves on Saturday, in which the Phillies traded veteran infielders John McDonald and Michael Young to playoff contenders, vacancies on the big league roster have been filled with the returns of Michael Martinez and Cesar Hernandez, as the duo has been promoted from Lehigh Valley.

Martinez, who turns 31-years-old this month, has posted a .300 average along with three home runs and 21 RBI for the Triple-A IronPigs in 71 games this year. Conversely, the switch-hitting Dominican sported a .171 average in 21 big league contests over several stints with the Phillies this season.

Hernandez, who projects as one of the best Phils positional prospects, was an All-Star second baseman this season but has been dabbling in the outfield quite a bit of late. His offensive numbers in the developmental ranks (.314/.378/.406) are much more impressive than his defensive performance at the new positions (four errors in 64 chances on top of other misplays not found in the box score).

Additionally, the 23-year-old tallied a .250 average with a double and an RBI in nine games with the Phillies earlier this season.

Look for other familiar names such as Phillippe Aumont and Freddy Galvis to return after Lehigh Valley’s regular season concludes on Monday.

Martinez back up here, color me surprised…

Why the hell won’t Ruben bring players who deserve it like Susdorf or Mitchell.

As I have said numerous times this year, it can only be one of two things, Mini has pictures of Ruin Jr in a “interesting” position or Mini’s the “fellow” in the picture with him.

        And it’s still hilarious!

Martinez is not a good player, but he has also hit about as well as Mitchell and Susdorf at LV and is more versatile.

Actually C. I think he has pictures of Rube and wheeler and some bald guy in a few compromising multitude of positions. I don’t know who the bald guy is. But I think we can draw some conclusions. There is a chance that one of the pictures has the bald guy using wheelers wig as a mustache. But wheeler is very recognizable. You can’t hear what he’s actually saying cause it’s a picture. But even if you could he’s talking with his mouth full.

The Phils just traded two infielders. Last time I looked, Susdorf was playing outfield. I suppose he might be able to play backup at SS or 3rd base though.

Also, it’s time for September callups, so anyone who’s deserving will be brought up about now. Martinez isn’t going to see much playing time.

I just knew Martinez would return in time for Cole Hamels’ next start. And, here he is!! Cole is saddled with this guy every time he pitches.

Just a guess but perhaps they keep bringing in Martinez to make opposing teams complacent when they see Ryno’s lineup card.

Or maybe they are trying to finish with a record in the bottom 10 of MLB to secure a higher draft pick and to have that pick protected if they sign a free agent whose team made him a qualifying offer.

Don’t want to start arbitration clock too soon on minor leaguers..
