Rally in Eighth Backs Dominant Hamels

B.J. Rosenberg stood on the mound surrounded by Nationals, bases loaded with the team from Washington up 2-1. On three straight sliders, Rosenberg struck out Ryan Zimmerman and the Phillies went to the eight down 2-1. With two outs, center fielder Cesar Hernandez walked and Jimmy Rollins smacked the eighth pitch he saw for an RBI double off of Tyler Clippard. After an intentional walk to Chase Utley, Carlos Ruiz drove in Rollins from second to put the Phillies ahead 3-2. Jonathan Papelbon struck out Wilson Ramos and Anthony Rendon with runners on first and third to earn his 24th save of the year.

Positioned to Win

The Phillies would have never been in a position to win tonight’s game had it not been for yet another quality start from Cole Hamels. It was Hamels 21st quality start of 2013, tying him for third in the Majors, behind only Clayton Kershaw and Adam Wainwright. Hamels went seven, giving up just two hits, including a first inning solo homer from Zimmerman, striking out eight and walking none. Hamels and opposing starter Stephen Strasburg (6 IP, 1 ER, 10 Ks, 2 BB) earned no decisions despite great outings.

Bullpen Nearly Lets it Slip Away

Justin De Fratus gave up a single and a walk before handing the ball to Cesar Jimenez. Jimenez walked Bryce Harper to load the bases before allowing Scott Hairston to hit a sacrifice fly. With two outs and the bases loaded, Rosenberg limited the damage by striking out Zimmerman to end the threat with three straight sliders.

No Offense But the Phillies have No Offense

The Phillies went just 4 for 27 tonight with five walks and nine LOB. This is not a particularly encouraging sign considering the club hit just .202 on their most recent seven game road trip.

The Philies continue their set with the Nats tomorrow as Ethan Martin will pitch against Gio Gonzalez.
