Rockies Interested in Ruiz, MLBTR Predictions

A couple of quick notes with only 16 hours remaining before Spring Training commences:

Troy Renck of the Denver Post is reporting that the Colorado Rockies “are pursuing” former Phillies catcher Carlos Ruiz, “mainly for his defense”. Renck acknowledges the presence of Wilin Rosario (.295/.315/.486, 21 HR in 2013) and sees the Rockies’ interest in Ruiz as a sign that Rosario may be moved to first base or right field. MLB Trade Rumors ranks Ruiz the 29th best free agent, with them predicting he will wind up with the Phillies on a two-year, $15 million deal. Tim Dierkes of MLBTR says that lists the Rays, Yankees, Blue Jays, White Sox, and Rangers as teams that would also be interested in Chooch if he was not re-signed by the Phillies.

Dierkes also listed a number of others players that they believe the Phillies will have interest in. Dierkes predicts the Phillies will sign Nelson Cruz, Ricky Nolasco, Ruiz, and Edward Mujica with the Phillies having some interest in Brian McCann, Masahiro Tanaka, Ervin Santana, Matt Garza, Ubaldo Jimenez, Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Marlon Byrd, Joaquin Benoit, Scott Feldman, Josh Johnson, Tim Hudson, Fernando Rodney, A.J. Pierzynski, Jason Vargas, Joe Smith, and Chris Young.

At Phillies Nation, we have taken a look at how Cruz, Garza, Salty, Byrd, Feldman, and Young may or may not fit with the Phils in our Free Agent Pass or Play series and you can be sure the series will continue. Be sure to check back at 10 AM for our look at how Chooch may or may not fit with the 2014 Phillies.

I took some time to digest Tim’s guesses about Nolasco, Mujica and Cruz signing. He did protect his guesses by attaching the if the Phils want to spend that much clause, which was fine, but let’s face it, even money aside, guessing correctly on all 3 is as slim as guessing that Nick would have thrown TDs 5,6, and 7 yesterday.

That said, taking a look at if he was right on all 3, that’d be a pretty good improvement. None of the 3 are perfect, as if any player is, but all 3 have gone through some degree of love lost with their current teams, so some caution jumps out. But Cruz’s power and righty stick are good, Mujica could fit in the pen in various roles, and Ricky is pretty good, and assumedly knows the division.

On the whole, I’d rather have a healthy Halladay, Werth, and Madson, but that’s not happening. But it speaks to how much ground needs to be made up. But it’s be an improvement, wnough things go right, and that’s a fairly long list, those 3 might add into a 90 or so win team. Enough for the post season? Fairly iffy.

Dierkes also guessed Halladay to the Mets. Doc’s next move is a mystery, but such a move would be colored groping. I hope he lands somewhere with a chance to win. But if he only is destined to prove he can still pitch, the Mets is a choice we'[d be happy to see. I just hope he has a choice off his off season progress. And I’d almost rather he not pitch here, becvause as unlikely as it is to go too far, I’d like to enter 2014 with as few question marks as possible. What a unique wish list!

For what it’s worth, last year he was right on 26% (13) of the top 50 free agent signings, which is pretty good, considering. But 10 of those 13 re-signed with their previous teams. Of the 34 of the 50 who changed teams, he got 3 of 34 correct (9%).

As a matter of fact Schmenk. Every time I read your posts for some reason I picture you as the Fact Guru on the Starship Enterprise Dana. People ask him a question and he rattles off the facts. I’m not being sarcastic Schenk, just in awe with how you get those facts out to us mortals. lol
