Report: Phillies Bring Back Abreu on Minor League Deal

One of the Phillies’ greatest players is coming back. This time, he’s (nearly) 40.

According to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN, the Phillies have reached an agreement with outfielder Bobby Abreu that will bring back the lefty on a minor league deal with an invitation to Spring Training. The deal is believed to be worth $800,000.

Abreu, turning 40 on March 11, has not played Major League Baseball since 2012 but has been scorching hot in the Venezuelan Winter League for Leones de Caracas. Abreu was an All-Star in 2004 and 2005 with the Phillies, ranks 11th in team history in HR, ninth in runs scored, third in BB%, seventh in steals, fifth in OBP, and ninth in slugging.

As a Phillie, Abreu put up a rather incredible .303/.416/.513 line in 5885 PA from 1998 through 2006. Abreu was acquired on November 18, 1997 for shortstop Kevin Stocker and would be traded to the Yankees on July 30, 2006 with Corey Lidle for C.J. Henry, Jesus Sanchez, Carlos Monasterios, and Matt Smith. According to Crasnick, Abreu is 13 homers and one steal short of joining Barry and Bobby Bonds as the only players in MLB history with 300 HR and 400 SB.

I loved Abreu back in the day, and always leaped to defend him against his critics. But seriously, do we not have enough over-the-hill players already?

I doubt he plays in the OF much. If he makes the team, he’ll probably have the Jim Thome role of 2012.

The money Ruben is putting out there for the old timers should have gone towards a good starting pitcher. Don’t you think. Come on Rube

Abreu’s hot bat in the Venezuelan Winter League obviously impressed the Phillies management. I welcome him back and with Manuel, Bowa and Byrd, it’s a nice reunion (smile).
It’s a nice gesture on the Phillies’ part to do this and perhaps Abreu can retired in a Phillies uniform in the near future.

Regardless of what they will pay him, it’s a good gamble with a renown hitter and may pay dividends as a pinch hitter deluxe in key situations and a hot bat will give him additional playing time.

I agree with Bruce. If he makes the team out of Spring Training, it’s most likely because he’s better than whatever alternatives we have. If he doesn’t make it, no big deal. Any signing without a bunch of guaranteed money is practically a good signing. He’ll probably play road games in spring training and get a shot to earn his keep…and then retire a Phillie.

I think Rube figured that since Old-Timers Games usually sell-out, that he’d make every game an old-timers game!

Too bad he isn’t right-handed. It gives them an option. Phillies roster is old? So what? There really aren’t a lot of bats in the system–anywhere–that look like they can’t learn something from a hitter like Abreu. You start the season with the old guys and bring up whatever youngsters who look ready as seems appropriate. And in spite of the fact that he refused to run into walls and spends months on the DL to please Philly’s considerable sadist contingent, he is a hell of a hitter. A very smart hitter.

Yankees are gonna be a really good team this year bet that. Tanaka is gonna be great from the start IMO… I prayed maybe amaro would be allowed to take this chance and bid war but I knew it was only a 1% chance… as usual he comes up very short…

With the 1 year suspension for Alex Rodriguez, it will relieve the Yankees of about $25 million in luxury-tax savings based on A-Rod’s 2014 salary. I knew then the Yankees would inevitably win the bid for Tanaka. Not even the the filthy rich L.A. Dodgers could match the Yankees obscene offer of 7 years and $155 million.

The Dodgers are plenty rich and could have matched or bettered the Yankees offer to Tanaka, but why? The Dodgers already have what is arguably the deepest pitching staff in MLB. They needed to spend $175 million on another pitcher like they needed to spend $175 million on another all-star outfielder. I never saw them as a serious contender for Tanaka’s services. Had the Dodgers not been able to come to terms with Kershaw it would have been a different story but I don’t believe management ever doubted they’d resign him. Conversely, the Yankees were desperate for another quality starter, especially since Andy is gone and C.C.’s wheels may be starting to come off. Plus, their farm system is nearly as barren as the Phillies’ system.

I think the savings to the Yankees by dumping Rodriguez’s salary for 2014 was actually about $23 million by some internal accounting figure – but what’s $2 million one way or the other these days?.

I guess the question is reduced to at what point should the Phils have bowed out. There’s no question they should have been in to a point. But if the Tanaka team turned down 8 years at 25 mil per from the Cubs, as reported, there’s only 1 team with which he wanted to hook up. This point, I’m more convinced NY is interesting than good. Beats the hell out of pretty blasé and not so good, which seems a forthright way to assess the ’14 Phils.

      • Bruce

        January 24, 2014 at 12:00 am

I think the Phillies organization were realistic and not going to delude themselves into thinking they could afford the extravagant free spending regardless of the luxury tax.

If true that the Cubs had a better offer for Tanaka and were turned down, it’s because, the team is looked upon as perenniel losers. On the other hand, the lure of Yankees’ famous pinstripes and glorious history was a major influence for Tanaka. Plus the opportunity to join another Japanese.starter in rotation, Hiroki Kuroda.

Also $155 million plus postseason bonus money from the playoffs is nothing to sneeze at. (smile)
