Frandsen Elects Free Agency – Phillies Nation

Frandsen Elects Free Agency

Utility infielder Kevin Frandsen has elected free agency per Philadelphia Inquirer Phillies beat writer Matt Gelb. Frandsen will forfeit a $900,000 bonus by doing so. He was outrighted off the Phillies 40-man roster on Sunday and will now be free to sign with any major league team.

Frandsen led all of major league baseball last season with 14 pinch hits but he struggled this spring hitting just .206 (7 for 34) with two RBIs. With Frandsen gone, and Ronny Cedeno being released, the Phillies bench is taking shape. Cesar Hernandez, Darin Ruf, Reid Brignac, Tony Gwynn Jr, and Bobby Abreu are the remaining candidates with only Hernandez and Ruf having a spot on the 40 man roster.

This move was a bit surprising. Frandsen passed through waivers, meaning all 29 other teams decided not to claim him and pay him the $900,000 he was owed, yet he still elected free agency. Its also surprising that the Phillies would outright one of their best pinch hitters. Frandsen had played well in his two years in Philly, playing all over the infield and hitting a respectable .280 with a .333 OBP. Final rosters have to be in by 3 PM EST on Sunday.

I think Abreu is finished. He might serve some purpose(mentor on a younger team. Say the Phillies circa 2008. We all know RAJ loves his dinosaurs, but i hope he shies away from Abreu. Brigna sucks he may have a ok bat but his offense is horrible. Im betting Rube is hoping he’ll will recapture his form the reason why he was once a top prospect. Extremely doubtful but hey who knows. I actually liked Frandsden a gutsy guy.

Adam Kilgore, Wash Post Nats beat had this tidbit on Frandsen…

Source: the Nats are one of two or three teams that have contacted IF Kevin Frandsen, who opted out of his deal with the Phillies today.

Earlier, he speculated that Jamey Carroll, released today might be a target for either the Phils, or Rangers. Seems like too many utility guys floating around for Carroll to land quickly, but that opinion might be just what Carroll needs to keep his career alive. Not everyone’s as good as contrarian indication as me.

The Nats might be a good place for Kevin. And vice versa. Good team guy, and a club very likely to be in the post season.

I wonder where the 900K will go? Erik Bedard?

if Bedard does wind up with the Phils, and you apply his contract as the replacement, more money will be spent. Bedard made over a mil last year, and the contract he opted out of with Tampa was similar with incentives on the number of starts potentially taking him up to 2.5ish, whereas Frandsen, far as I know, was a flat 900k.

The extent to which that plays into lux tax considerations is beyond my scope, although it seems common knowledge the Phils are pretty close to the threshold.

And this is not to suggest any Phillie interest in Bedard has been reported, at least to my awareness. When Bedard’s supply matches the market’s demand, I’d guess he winds up with very similar earnings and potential to what he lured out of the Rays. but that’s a guess.

It was good to see Howard homer tonight.
