Galvis to Start Over Rollins Again

Ryne Sandberg has been favoring Freddy Galvis at shortstop as of late. That trend continues again today as Galvis is scheduled to start at shortstop for the third consecutive game as the Phillies take on the Yankees today at Bright House Field. Galvis, who went 1-2 with a triple, walk, and RBI in yesterday’s 6-5 win against the Orioles, has been a favorite of Sandberg throughout the offseason as he hinted that Galvis will make the team as a utility player.

When asked about Rollins’ health and that if he’s just getting a break, Sanberg said, “No, he’s fine.”

According to Rollins himself, Sandberg is “Upset about something” but he hasn’t explained his recent benching.

We’ve seen Rollins get benched before by Charlie Manuel for a lack of hustle, so this isn’t anything new for the veteran shortstop.

Todd Zolecki reported that when Sandberg was asked if Galvis could challenge Rollins for playing time this upcoming season, Sandberg said, “Freddy’s a guy that will get playing time at various positions. He’s a guy that I like in the lineup. I feel good about what he brings to the table. The biggest thing I like is his energy and positive influence. His positive influence on everybody that’s around him.”

Galvis, who is batting .148 with a .258 OBP, has not necessarily outplayed Rollins, who is batting .133 with a .316 OBP.

It’ll be interesting to see what transpires over the next couple of days. Rollins is still expected to be the Opening Day starter, but perhaps this is the start of a rocky relationship between player and coach.
