2014 Gameday

Gameday 1: Phillies vs. Rangers

Philadelphia Phillies (0-0) at Texas Rangers (0-0)

Starting Pitchers:
PHI: Cliff Lee
vs.
TEX: Tanner Scheppers

Time: 2:05, The Ballpark in Arlington
TV: CSN
Weather: Cloudy/windy, 81
Media: Twitter and Facebook

A Note for Tonight:

It’s Opening Day for the Philadelphia Phillies. Hope springs eternal with the first day of the year. Everyone is a contender, on even ground. But the Phillies will have their work cut out for them in three games with the Rangers to open the season. The good news is they won’t see Yu Darvish. The bad news is that Rangers offense is still loaded, now featuring Prince Fielder and Shin Soo-Choo. As for the Phillies, they’ll have to break the bats open and keep pace with Texas from day one if they hope to leave Arlington with a series win.

Let the games begin.

Lineup:

CF Revere / SS Rollins 2B Utley / 1B Howard / RF Byrd / DH Brown / C Ruiz / 3B Asche / LF Gwynn Jr.

Nice to see Gwynn in the opening day lineup. If anything this year I am very interested to see what kind of player he develops into. I like him a lot.

    enjoying Moyer and stairs!

what a roster and line up.

Way to spend your $190,000,000.00 wisely Ruben!

Phillies are still in first place!

I am lucky enough to have the Rangers starter in fantasy.

    go phils!

      AFW: Only $180,000,000!
I’ve told you a million times not to exaggerate.

      March 31, 2014 at 9:30 pm

      LOL AFW

Your Fantasy team is starting off pretty crappy!

Hopefully you can criticize them all season and not jump off the cliff of the Phillies world every night.

    Quick work by Lee

One hit one run. Asche is clutch(slight sarcasism) nice to see them working the count

  9. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 2:38 pm

Three hits 6 runs. Guess Jimmy didn’t need to run that one out. Nice AB Ben. Guess this is going to be a dominate offense(again slight sarcasm)

  10. Andrew from Waldorf

    March 31, 2014 at 2:39 pm

That’s what I get for starting the Texas guy in fantasy.

    Jimmy rollins for MVP

    go phils!

    Liking Stairs and Moyer especially.

    Nice inning!

  12. Andrew from Waldorf

    March 31, 2014 at 2:41 pm

    Howard walked.

If he gets to 115 walks this year this team may contend.

Please Jimmy don’t get homer crazy

    lol

  13. Lefty

    March 31, 2014 at 2:49 pm

Just watched a replay, someone please explain to TMAC that left field is the third base side. He seems to have forgotten.

  14. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 2:49 pm

Come on Cliff you have a 6 run lead. What are you doing

  15. wbramh

    March 31, 2014 at 2:49 pm

I’m guessing Jimmy took note of Rios beating out that ground ball even on a good throw
    But I kid Jimmy.
Can’t ask much more of him after that salami.
In just one at-bat Jimmy has produced better than 1/10th of his total RBIs for 2013.

  16. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 2:50 pm

Maybe they should have only scored 1 run. Bare down get an out

  17. betasigmadeltashag

Stop the nibbling and throw strikes

    March 31, 2014 at 2:55 pm

Who put KK into Cliffs body. Will the real Cliff Lee please stand up

  20. wbramh

    March 31, 2014 at 2:55 pm

And Tony Gwynn is in there for his defense?
    Okay, I’ll relax.

  21. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 2:56 pm

Ok guess we need another crocked number

    • wbramh

      March 31, 2014 at 3:00 pm

Cliff is just trying to give Rangers’ fans hope thus setting them up for a big disappointment…
      I hope.

  22. Chris

    March 31, 2014 at 2:58 pm

They need to win when Lee pitches. That’s the only turn in the rotation when they will have a chance!

  23. wbramh

    March 31, 2014 at 3:04 pm

Geez. Win or lose, I’m just now appreciating (for the 65th time) how much I missed baseball.

  24. Nick

    March 31, 2014 at 3:09 pm

Another year when we can’t move runners. 2nd and 3rd with no outs and we can’t score a run

  25. Lefty

    March 31, 2014 at 3:15 pm

Not to worry, Lee’s ERA is only 31.50 right now!

  26. Art

    March 31, 2014 at 3:16 pm

    Lee sucks

  27. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 3:16 pm

Shouldn’t 6 runs be enough for cliff. How about not giving 7 runs in 2 innings by your ace

    • wbramh

      March 31, 2014 at 3:23 pm

      Not 2 innings. – 3 innings.
His ERA only stands at 21.00 with a chance to bring that all the way down to 7.00.

      • betasigmadeltashag

        March 31, 2014 at 3:36 pm

Yes ERA wise 3 innings but reality they scored them in 2 innings, that is what I was speaking to

      • wbramh

        March 31, 2014 at 5:23 pm

        Gotcha.

  28. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 3:18 pm

When Cliff is bad he can be really bad

  29. wbramh

    March 31, 2014 at 3:19 pm

I thought it was interesting that right after our announcers wondered aloud why the Ranger’s weren’t keeping the infield deep Andrus turned out to be in the ideal position to easily nail Howard at the plate.

    Beautiful catch by Revere.
I’m liking that kid, more and more.

  30. Brooks

    March 31, 2014 at 3:20 pm

    where’s my cool aid

  31. Lefty

    March 31, 2014 at 3:21 pm

And now his ERA is all the way down to 21.00. The numbers sure move fast this time of year!

    • wbramh

      March 31, 2014 at 3:27 pm

Yeah, who would have predicted a 21.00 ERA for Cliff and a league-tying 4 RBI for Jimmy?

  32. Glutenous

    March 31, 2014 at 3:25 pm

The Phillies are gonna need to win games where they have there ace on the mound and get an early lead if they are gonna have even moderate success… Texas has a great offense, but come on Cliff. Whenever I think of Lee pitching with an early lead I think of game 2 of the 2011 NLDS against St. Louis. Anyone have any stats of Lee when pitching with a lead over the course of his career?

    • Glutenous

      March 31, 2014 at 3:25 pm

      Sorry… *Their ace

  33. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 3:34 pm

Ok cliff at least the offense is trying to save your bad outing. Let’s see RAJ’s big signing can come through

    • wbramh

      March 31, 2014 at 3:43 pm

Jimmy’s thinking, “Thank God it wasn’t me popping up to Fielder.”
Personally, I thought that looking strikeout on Jimmy came on a ball. Either way, a couple of tough inside pitches for a guy whose given up 7 runs.
A couple more games like Jimmy’s having today and Ryno is going to want to marry him.
(Probably too late for more kids)

  34. Brian Michael

    March 31, 2014 at 3:35 pm

I think Stairs will be told to stop rooting for the Phillies in the booth.

He and Moyer are doing well overall.

    • Andrew from Waldorf

      March 31, 2014 at 3:41 pm

When you have had Wheeler for 30 years or whatever it was. The next guys are going to come off well.

If they could just put up a picture of wheelers hair during pre games I could get my fix.

      I will miss tat desperately.

  35. Andrew from Waldorf

    March 31, 2014 at 3:39 pm

    Cliff Lee is a bum!!!!

    Trade him!!!!

Curious what is the CB on the phils uniform for?

    Fun game regardless.

Wish I hadn’t started the Rangers pitcher versus this Phillies murders row line up.

2 hits and a walk for the bif piece.

I am most thrilled for the walk. I get happier about that then his homers.

    • wbramh

      March 31, 2014 at 4:54 pm

The “CB” is to honor Claire Betz, a team owner and wife of the late John Betz who was CEO of Betz Labs. Claire passed away in early February of this year. A good lady from all accounts.

      • Andrew from Waldorf

        March 31, 2014 at 5:05 pm

        Thank you

  36. Brooks

    March 31, 2014 at 3:39 pm

After giving up 7 runs why is Cliff still out there?
    Another run or two?

  37. Andrew from Waldorf

    March 31, 2014 at 3:43 pm

    Happy 2014 Brooks!!!!

Better start drinking if the ace is gonna get shelled like this.

  38. wbramh

    March 31, 2014 at 3:47 pm

Considering the fact that Cliff has had years in Philadelphia losing 1-0 and 2-1 games perhaps it’s only fair that he win a few this year by 20-19 scores.

  39. wbramh

    March 31, 2014 at 3:56 pm

Cliff Lee wins a 21.00 ERA game thanks to the bat of John Mayberry?
    The World is upside down.

  40. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 3:56 pm

Guess JMJ isn’t that bad off the bench. Nice double and nice base running by Asche.

  41. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 3:59 pm

Would like a quick inning please Cliff we still love you

  42. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 4:14 pm

Seems to me the phillies strike zone is a little bigger when they are up the for Cliff. Nice shot for Marlon

  43. Andrew from Waldorf

    March 31, 2014 at 4:22 pm

    11 runs?

I didn’t think they would score 11 runs combined by may first.

    amazing.

    I am a believer!

  44. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 4:25 pm

Nice base running by Brown and a nice AB again by JMJ

  45. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 4:28 pm

    Revere having a nice game.
The high flying power offense for the Phillies is back 13 runs in the 6th. Guess the offensive worries are over.

(Again the need for a slightly sarcastic button is needed)

  46. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 4:32 pm

Nice to see 2 out runs. Byrd having a nice day.
Nice to score some runs on Cliffs off day.
Let’s go pen lets see if you can hold a 5 run lead. No walks please

  47. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 4:36 pm

    Nice inning Jake.

  48. wbramh

    March 31, 2014 at 4:37 pm

    I love Diekman’s big slider.
I think he’s going to be a bright spot on this club and hopefully for a few years to come.

  49. Morris Buttermaker

    March 31, 2014 at 4:37 pm

Ok guys. We got a game with the Rangers today. And that only means one thing. Bad News for the Rangers.

  50. Jay

    March 31, 2014 at 4:38 pm

Where has this offense been all Spring? Who cares- better to show up late rather than never- or just on time actually! Go Phils!

  51. Phillies Fan from Germany

    March 31, 2014 at 4:43 pm

Couldnt make it earlier and just turned on the tv. Cant believe the score i am seeing. Go phils.

  52. Manny

    March 31, 2014 at 4:52 pm

    How about them Phils?

Watching them live from London and very impressed with the offence so far… they’re walking, stealing… doing all the little things we didn’t do the past couple of years!

    • wbramh

      March 31, 2014 at 4:57 pm

Yep,the plate patience and aggressiveness on the base paths is a much fun to watch as grand salamis.

  53. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 4:53 pm

Come on Jake you got a five run lead. Get the job done

  54. Morris Buttermaker

    March 31, 2014 at 4:59 pm

There is just something wonderful about watching Utley and Rollins turn a double play.

  55. Glutenous

    March 31, 2014 at 5:02 pm

Sucks when you have to run a guy like Rosenberg out there late in games.

  56. Andrew from Waldorf

    March 31, 2014 at 5:06 pm

all this building to the Paplebomb appearance I am dreading.

    • wbramh

      March 31, 2014 at 5:31 pm

      You’ve raised my greatest fear.
We can only hope he’s still wearing his lucky Chooch jersey.
Then again, in this crazy upside-down game he may strike out the side.

  57. Brooks

    March 31, 2014 at 5:07 pm

My buddy asked me what is the over/under with the amount of runs the relief will surrender…
so far we are at 3

  58. Brooks

    March 31, 2014 at 5:09 pm

BJ – 15 pitches and 5 of them for strikes – doesn’t quite work that way fella..

  59. wbramh

    March 31, 2014 at 5:13 pm

Is it just me or does Rosenberg seem to throw the ball rather than pitch it? I didn’t see a pitch that wouldn’t have been hammered had he put the ball anywhere close to the plate.

  60. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 5:18 pm

Is it just me or was Asche swing a carbon copy of. Chase’s HR swing

    • Manny

      March 31, 2014 at 5:21 pm

      It was definitely very Utley-esque!

  61. Morris Buttermaker

    March 31, 2014 at 5:30 pm

Is it just me or are we starting everything with “is it just me”?

  62. Morris Buttermaker

    March 31, 2014 at 5:38 pm

Is it just me or is this beer (Stone Go To) absolutely delicious?

  63. betasigmadeltashag

    March 31, 2014 at 5:47 pm

    Offense A+ defense A- starting pitching F
    Relievers B
Jake a good inning Bastardo good outing and Paps solid 9th. Nice to pick up Lee with an offensive win on a bad outing. 1-0

  64. rellis

    March 31, 2014 at 5:49 pm

How does Cliff Lee get a pass for this game? Because they will win and he is in line to get the win? Hamels would never get such a pass and he hasn’t for better efforts than this. Lee sure is the golden boy in this town.

    • wbramh

      March 31, 2014 at 5:55 pm

I seem to recall Cliff losing X number of games in a row by tight one-run scores a few seasons back just as Hamels suffered a similar fate last year.

He’ll take it over a 1-0 loss and so will I.

  65. wbramh

    March 31, 2014 at 5:52 pm

(Is it just me) or was Papelbon throwing a 93 mph fastball (and a wicked splitter) arguably the most important highlight of this game?

    • "Big Ed" Delahanty

      March 31, 2014 at 6:06 pm

He was, which is a good sign. Still trying to digest the oddities of this game, but I’m loving the win, walks, and defense. Go Phils!

    • Morris Buttermaker

      March 31, 2014 at 6:18 pm

Papelbon looked absolutely dominant. It was great to see. That’s huge.

    • Lefty

      March 31, 2014 at 9:12 pm

I think it’s you. The hitters and base-runners stole the show for me today. I absolutely loved the heads up by play like Brown scoring on the deflection to Andrus.

      • wbramh

        March 31, 2014 at 9:48 pm

Yes, the hitters and base-runners stole the show today but the ability of Papelbon to rediscover a few mph on his fastball and throw a killer splitter may mean season-long positive news for this team.

  66. photoFred

    March 31, 2014 at 8:19 pm

I had considered a few ways today’s game might go but THAT wasn’t one of them. Paps was impressive. Jimmy blunted that idiotic ST kerfluffle and Asche came through like a veteran. One thing that scared me was watching Howard digging for home. If that was top speed I think I could take him.

  67. Brooks

    April 1, 2014 at 1:29 pm

Good turnout – even though its the opening day. Good to see old friends.
