Phillies Acquire Jayson Nix from Rays, Send Aumont to Iron Pigs

On Friday, the Phillies rounded out their bench by acquiring Jayson Nix, brother of Laynce, from the Tampa Bay Rays for cash. Nix, 31, will be Jimmy Rollins’ backup at shortstop.

Last season with the Yankees, Nix hit 236 with three homers and 24 RBIs in 86 games. He can also play second base, third base, and has played in the outfield. Not a bad move to make as the final bench bat.

Reid Brignac was told he would not make the team and Phillippe Aumont was once again sent to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Aumont can’t seem to put it all together, although he did have a decent spring. Aumont went 0-2 with a 2.77 ERA in 10 Grapefruit League appearances. The hope is that he can finally put it all together.

They needed someone that could play SS until Freddy returns. The money spent makes me worry that they don’t see Freddy being back anytime soon, I hope I’m wrong about that.

I don’t know whether Aumont is ever going to get it. With his size and tools, I was really hoping he’d do well and become a force out of the pen. He can’t seem to repeat his delivery so as not to overthrow and lose control. At some point you have to wonder if he ever will.

I’m not clear on Nix’s contract. $900K last year, arbitration eligible this year. What are the Phillies on the hook for? Anyone know?

I don’t know how much Nix signed for, but he has an opt out clause on June 1 no matter whether he is on a big league roster or not. Something tells me he is gone at that point.
