Phils Acquire C Koyie Hill to Washington Nationals’ beat writer William Ladson, the Phillies have acquired catcher Koyie Hill from the Washington Nationals for a player to be named later or cash. Hill has spent parts of ten seasons in the Major Leagues, making his MLB debut with the Dodgers in 2003 and spending time with the Diamondbacks, the Cubs, and Marlins. Hill is a career .206/.266/.287 hitter with 8 HR in 1027 PA and is anticipated to take the place of the recently-released Lou Marson as the veteran back-up catcher in Lehigh Valley with Cameron Rupp serving as the expected starter.

Would Mini-Mart not strap on the pads?

Martinez hasn’t been with the Phillies org since October. He’s with Pittsburgh.

Why on Earth would you trade for a career .206 hitter to be a back up in AAA?!? Is our farm system in such shambles that they have no one else? They couldn’t pick up a guy off the street? I realize the player to be named later will likely also be a scrub, but why give up anything?

I thought this is so that if you need a backup in Philly for a week or two, instead of bringing up Rupp and making him sit on the bench 90% of the time, you bring up a veteran like Hill for that, and let Rupp continue playing full time.

Should’ve just kept marson if that’s the case…

I agree with Hogey. Marson couldn’t hit .206? Also, with Chooch being 35, odds are he’ll only play 120 games even if he doesn’t go on the DL. I hope if (when) he does, they bring up Rupp. I don’t get this organization always letting young players rot in the minors, while giving washed-ups or never has-beens playing time in the bigs.
