Phils Rank 29th in “25 and Under” Talent

Baseball Prospectus released their annual ranking of the thirty Major League teams and how they stack up with talent of age 25 and under, including both talent that is already on their roster and talent found in their minor league systems.

The Phillies did not rank favorably in the opinion of Baseball Prospectus. Their Jeff Moore writes:

“The Phillies have three potential big-league regulars on the U25 list, but none of the three (Ben RevereCody Asche, and Jonathan Pettibone) is an impact talent. The two prospects at the top of this list could be better than any of the three current major leaguers, but Jesse Biddle will be more of a secondary piece than a franchise cornerstone, as will Maikel Franco if he is forced to move to first base. There is some talent on the rest of the list, but it is all quite far away from coming to fruition.”

Moore is certainly more bearish than others on Biddle and Franco but what perhaps is more frightening is the other realization that comes with their list: division rival Nationals rank second, the Braves third, and Marlins fifth. Even the Mets ranked twelfth. This might be a long next couple of years.

Yeah, but what about 35 and over talent?

Biddle should be a good #3. I see a problem with his BB. Still not sold on Franco yet would like to see what he does in AAA this year or wherever they place him. No one viewed Petti more than a 5th started. His shoulder woes though are alarming. No one said that Revere would be a corner stone. He was pretty much a finish product when we got him. We knew Ben wouldnt morph to a 30HR hitter. What we potentially have for a lack of better term is a poor mans Juan Pierre. Not that its a bad thing.

“We knew Ben wouldnt morph to a 30 HR hitter.”
Only if he punched Howard sometime in 2011.

I find these rankings to be silly exercises.

And people wonder why we are negative? The lack of U25 talent is just another reason why Rube needs to go.

I am going to assume that anyone bemoaning the lack of U25 talent was also bemoaning the “win now” moves of 2009-2011, since one is a direct result of the other.
