You can say this is the time of year that the hitters aren’t warm yet or that the “pitchers are still ahead of the hitters” but make no mistake: the Phillies are off to a slow offensive start. Hitting just .192 as a club through five games, the Phils look to bounce back in this afternoon’s match up against Tampa.

Line-Up: Revere CF, Blanco SS, Brown LF, Franco 3B, Ruf 1B, Mayberry DH, Castro RF, Cedeno 3B, Nieves C

Go Phils!

I gotta just keep reminding myself these games don’t count- we won’t be down 1 win to 5 losses to start the regular season- our total offensive effort will be higher than the Mendoza line and we won’t blow leads in the late innings again…

    Don’t fret, Jay.

I know a few national naysayers have picked our Phightin’s for last place this season but I believe they’ll win 65 games even if Cole is out until June and Pettibone is gone for the season (bite my tongue, er, fingers). That will probably be enough to hold off those young Marlins’ stars barring injuries.to our rejuvenated retirees. And if the Mets have key injuries (or decide to rehire Madoff to handle their finances), who knows? Third place may not be be all that far a climb in the standings. And if Ban Johnson can lure the Nats and Braves into the American League… well, the sky’s the limit.

I do have a suspicion that Cole is going to be limited to 100 pitches per game (at least I would limit him to that number). He has a history of inflammation so I don’t think they can be too careful – especially since this bout with it has lingered since last season. A cautiously used Cole would put even more pressure on the pen to outperform last year’s unspectacular act but I think Bastardo has talent and Diekman appears to be the real find out of the bunch.

Worst case?t The boys the cellar and Montgomery hires Sam Hinckey to clean house.
Come to think of it, that may be the best case.
