2014 Gameday

Gameday 24: Phillies vs. Diamondbacks

Philadelphia Phillies (11-12) at Arizona Diamondbacks (8-18)

Starting Pitchers:
PHI: LHP Cliff Lee (3-2, 3.09)
vs.
ARZ: RHP: Bronson Arroyo (1-2, 9.50)

Time: 8:10, Chase Field
TV: Comcast Sportsnet
Weather: Sunny, 72
Media: Twitter and Facebook

A Note for Tonight:

This is the perfect opportunity to crush the snakes. Cliff Lee is on the mound which makes it a winnable game from the start. Bronson Arroyo is on the other side and the Phillies should have no trouble beating this guy up. He has won his last three starts against the Phillies but allowed five earned runs his last time on the mound against the lowly Cubs. Arroyo should be in for a beating tonight. Should be.

Lineup:

Revere CF / Rollins SS / Utley 2B / Howard 1B / Byrd RF / Brown LF / Ruiz C / Galvis 3B / Lee P

The diamondbacks should have been in for a beating this whole series… Should have

Extremely disappointed in last nights game

It’s baseball — there is never “should have” in any short series.

        Uh ya ok

If the Phillies and D-backs played 30, 40, games, and Arizona is as bad as they seem to be, then yes — the Phillies should win more games. But over a short series, anything can happen, and usually does. 3 or 5 or 7 games are not enough for the better team to always win. Ask the Dodgers.

You have to beat the teams you are 100% supposed to beat bottom line… The better team always wins, that’s why it’s called a win so you know who is better, that’s all there is to it

Been to the first game of the Phillies vs DBacks series for the past 5 years and the Phills have lost them all!!

Arroyo has owned the Phiilles the past few years.

Betsy Ross strikes again – look at that kisser.. anyone else just want to slap her?
Which color stockings is she wearing with the D’backs? Black lace ones I suppose

Time to teach Gwynn to play third lol

The funny thing is, the 3rd basemen currently hitting around .185 in Lehigh Valley (Franco) might be the best thing the Phils have going at that corner.

      Hey – can’t hurt.

What, is Maikel going to cost them the pennant?
Lehigh Valley wasn’t winning with the parent club’s current bull pen.
Why don’t we give them back the pen and try Franco for awhile?

Lol logical I’ll give you that…

Well lets see what the bullpen has up there sleeves for this lead

This is where Bastard gets cute and avoids getting the ball over the plate

        April 26, 2014 at 10:46 pm

        Er, BastardO, that is.
Wasn’t trying to be demeaning – just typed too fast.

        But here we go.

      • Hogey's Role

        April 26, 2014 at 10:47 pm

Sometimes I wonder if they sit out there trying to come up with different ways to blow these games…

In all reality I really do like bastardo though he’s nasty

  10. Tracey

    April 26, 2014 at 10:44 pm

OK, now all we need is for the bullpen not to blow it. Is that too much to ask for? Yeah, it probably is…

    April 26, 2014 at 10:44 pm

Ok, nice job bats, now come on Pen. Be tough Antonio!

  12. Hogey's Role

    April 26, 2014 at 10:45 pm

Should have kept abreu and canned Mayberry or nix…. 40 years old and out plays both of those two combined

    • schmenkman

      April 26, 2014 at 10:52 pm

Maybe at the plate, although a week is not enough to tell much yet. Gwynn is the much better baserunner and fielder though.

      • Hogey's Role

        April 26, 2014 at 10:59 pm

I agree I didn’t say get rid of Gwynn… I said can Mayberry or nix or both when ruf comes back

      • schmenkman

        April 26, 2014 at 11:12 pm

Ok, I was responding to this:

“Should have kept abreu and canned Mayberry or nix…. 40 years old and out plays both of those two combined”

      • Hogey's Role

        April 26, 2014 at 11:15 pm

Yes referring to Mayberry and nix

      • schmenkman

        April 26, 2014 at 11:20 pm

Shoot — you’re right of course.

      • Hogey's Role

        April 26, 2014 at 11:23 pm

I was starting to think I was misreading something there lol…

Idk if abreu can keep it up but he looks good so far… Couple that with the fact I have no tolerance for nix and that’s where my reasoning comes from

  13. lefty

    April 26, 2014 at 10:53 pm

I trust Adams more than Antonio. Problem is this guy Pollock is killing us. Fingers crossed.

    • Tracey

      April 26, 2014 at 10:56 pm

I’m mostly worried about Crapelbon. I know he hasn’t blown it since that first time this year, but I don’t trust him.

      • lefty

        April 26, 2014 at 11:00 pm

A couple more runs would help , nice Dom

WHEW! OK, just three more outs…

  15. Hogey's Role

    April 26, 2014 at 11:06 pm

I definitely think it’s time to send galvis down for a while and get him some regular at bats… kid is struggling

He reached the base before the tag, but it wasn’t a clean slide and he came off the bag twice. Utley made the tag on his knee during one of those off-the-bag moments.

  18. lefty

    April 26, 2014 at 11:13 pm

    Yes!

  19. Tracey

    April 26, 2014 at 11:13 pm

Whew! Replay bailed out Crapelbon’s sorry ass.

  20. wbramh

    April 26, 2014 at 11:13 pm

The name Nix should have been a clue… twice!

    Mayberry I can’t figure out.
The guy started off with some promise a few years back but has continued to regress. He appears to stay healthy, is certainly a good athlete, very bright and I’m sure he cares – and he’s got that long, toned look at the plate that suggests a dangerous hitter. He’s also got that overly long swing and it doesn’t help him catch up to the ball. Unlike Howard, who is about his size, JMJ is all arms at the plate and little wrist action.

There’s just a lack of instinctive reaction there that guys with far less athleticism don’t suffer. He also seems like a really nice kid, someone who would break your heart to have to cut from the team. But like Tony Gwynn, Jr. JMJ is just not his father’s son.

Then again, between Galvis hitting .040 and Nix at .179, JMJ seems like Ty Cobb at .190.

    WOO HOO!!! Phils WIN!!!

This is a new thing, pulling victory out of the jaws of defeat. Usually it’s the other way around for the Phils.

    Awesome play chooch and chase!!!!

Papelbon is looking good, he’s got good life to that fastball right now

  24. wbramh

    April 26, 2014 at 11:17 pm

    How about that.
    What a crazy game.
Win or lose, what a wonderful sport.
    Especially the win part.

Dback fans really are suffering through this season. Came very close to blowing a 4 run lead in the late innings yesterday and blew a 5 run lead today. Bad pun but the Dbacks really seems snakebit.

So nice to see the other guy’s pen blow it for a change and the other guys making the base-running and fielding mistakes.

But poor Galvid is now down to .033. He’s getting approaching my grandmother’s batting average… and she’s been dead for 44 years.

The bullpen didn’t allow a single run… am I reading the box score correctly?

    • wbramh

      April 26, 2014 at 11:46 pm

      You read it correctly.
Had I not seen it with my own eyes I would have said you were probably in a deep, deep dream and should be careful not to pee yourself.
Come to think of it, I’m feeling some moisture down there, myself.
But I think it’s just happy tinkle.

You could make a case for Utley being a costar of the game thanks to that heads up tag.
Or I should say heads up tag, again.
Most 2nd basemen would have made the initial swipe and stopped there. Utley continues to look for every possible edge.
