Gameday 27: Phillies vs. Nationals

phillies

Philadelphia Phillies (13-13) at Washington Nationals (16-12)Nationals

Starting Pitchers:
PHI: Cliff Lee
vs.
TEX: Stephen Strasburg

Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Partly sunny, 66

A Note for Tonight:

Friday’s opener with the Nationals is the first game the Phillies have played since Tuesday, and their altered rotation has created what shapes up on paper to be a terrific pitcher’s duel. Cliff Lee will take the mound for the Phillies, coming off a less than stellar start against the Diamondbacks in which he allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings. Lee has pitched well against the Nationals in his career, going 6-4 in 11 starts with a 2.87 ERA, and he averages a strikeout per inning against Washington.

Lee’s counterpart will be power right-hander Stephen Strasburg, who has scuffled at times this year but is coming off a seven inning shutout performance against San Diego in which he punched out 11 batters. Strasburg has had some success against the Phillies, pitching to a 2.65 ERA in six career starts against them. Against current Phillies players, however, he has yielded only two homers and five RBI in 53 at bats.

Lineup:

Revere CF/ Rollins SS/ Utley 2B/ Howard 1B/ Byrd RF/ Brown LF/ Ruiz C/ Asche 3B/ Lee P

I think Marlon might be on a hot streak. With a little help from our friend Jason. Nice 2 out rally

What the Phils don’t play in a week and no one is watching tonight. The Flyers aren’t even playing

  3. Hogey's Role

    May 2, 2014 at 7:44 pm

I’m still not sold on Marlon Byrd, but I’m glad he jacked that three run bomb!!

      May 2, 2014 at 9:09 pm

I like him Hogey, always have, and thought it was a great pickup.
PS. Could you change your name? , my phone always wants to auto correct it to “honey” and I don’t go that way. (Not that tthere’s anything wrong with that)

        May 2, 2014 at 9:33 pm

Lol now that was funny, honey’s role… Hmmm idk if that rolls off the tongue quite as well

    May 2, 2014 at 7:54 pm

@Hogey, maybe not. But who else was there?? Huge upgrade over Delmon.

Nats players took so many pitches in the 1st. Phils- revere and JRoll 1st pitch Rollins- not so much. But what at bat by CHASE! And RyHo comes through.

    • schmenkman

      May 2, 2014 at 9:41 pm

Mikey, fyi, that’s way off base. Rollins has swung at the first pitch far less than the average player for most of his career:

MLB average: 27.8% of first pitches are swung at

      Rollins since 2006: 18.2%

      Rollins this year: 15.9%

Oh yeah, I have been wondering all season- what does the “CB” on the Phillies uniform mean?

In DC and I finally get to watch a game live.

    • Tracey

      May 2, 2014 at 8:32 pm

CB is in honor of Claire Betz, an owner nobody ever heard of before the patch. She died in the offseason. I guess they were desperate to come up with something to put on a patch.

That’s the first time I’ve ever seen a bench-clearing chat.

  7. lefty

    May 2, 2014 at 9:12 pm

Disagree with this move and don’t care about “righty lefty” . If this thing goes extras, they’ll pay for burning Gwynn like that in a close game.

Ditch the slider Diekman, just give him the gas.

  12. PaMikeyDC

    May 2, 2014 at 9:29 pm

Wow!!! Not only may we lose. But no W for Cliff, No L for Stras and that idiot Span may get the last laugh. Have to win this game!!

And thanks Tracey for the CB note. Appreciate it buddy.

    Diekman????????????????

    Really

need to win games like this if you want to contend.

    Maybe they don’t want to.

  16. Hogey's Role

    Still no outs?

  18. Andrew from Waldorf

    May 2, 2014 at 9:35 pm

See Ruben instead of a bunch of old guys who you are over paying for past performance.

you pay a couple of young hungry guys.

I wish the Phillies would publically state a loss number that would mean Ruben is fired.

So I would have something to root for and some excitement with this brutal roster.

the 3rd highest paid n baseball mind you.

    • jeff of nova

      May 2, 2014 at 9:38 pm

You really can’t blame this on the “old” guys Lee pitched well both Utley Howard Byrd all scored, yes Adams was a mess by diekman was worse

  19. jeff of nova

    May 2, 2014 at 9:36 pm

I question the diekman should have been Bastardo this game is done the Nats pen is money

  20. lefty

    May 2, 2014 at 9:40 pm

For those of you that have the luxury of getting the home broadcast, you have no idea what a horses ass the Nats play by play man is.

    • Andrew from Waldorf

      May 2, 2014 at 9:44 pm

I don’t think any other cities fans would put up with this crap.

They fired Dibble because he told the truth.

But remember this is a city where every year they think the Skins are great.

Ovechkin is 875th in the NHL in plus minus and they think hes great.

They are the dumbest fans in all of the country.

I get the package and I like watching all the different broadcasts.

This guy for the Nats is the worst.
F.P. seems to play into the stupidity too

  21. Andrew from Waldorf

    May 2, 2014 at 9:41 pm

If you live in northern Virginia you have to listen to these National broadcasters too.

They are the worst in the entire sport.

Every play is a great one. Every player is a hall of famer.

the Senators have very real problems.

But this division is so bad I guess they win it my osmosis.

If braves hadn’t had all the injuries they would have won it.

It wont be the Phillies. Of that I am sure lol

    • jeff of nova

      May 2, 2014 at 9:59 pm

Yup Bob carpenter is a schmuck and FP sux

That made me sick watching Byrd look foolish and Brown has no idea where is swing Is….they should have ph for him oh wait we have nobody to do that

  22. Hogey's Role

    May 2, 2014 at 9:45 pm

Well if you live in ny you get the updates on your phone or tv so be thankful you get to see the game…

  23. Andrew from Waldorf

    May 2, 2014 at 9:50 pm

I pay for the baseball package.

To enjoy this great team LOL

I am a seam head though and I will watch a west coast game after this.

For me the package is great for more than just the Phillies.

  24. lefty

    May 2, 2014 at 9:52 pm

Will the Nats go to a lefty?

    • Andrew from Waldorf

      May 2, 2014 at 9:54 pm

      Why ?

      Its Howard

  25. Tracey

    May 2, 2014 at 9:53 pm

It’s nice to see Werth playing for the Phils again.

  26. lefty

    May 2, 2014 at 9:53 pm

    Guess they didn’t have to.

    Yet another bullpen implosion.

  28. Andrew from Waldorf

    May 2, 2014 at 9:56 pm

First and second no one out.

Senators have them just where they want them.

Middle of the line up coming up

  29. jeff of nova

    May 2, 2014 at 10:01 pm

Bastardo should have been last inning

  30. Phillies Fan from Germany

    May 2, 2014 at 10:03 pm

Brown Really Looks terrible. His OPS is now 30 Pointe below cosy asche’s. Amazing.

  31. "Big Ed" Delahanty

    May 2, 2014 at 10:04 pm

Not sure where last year’s Dom Brown hibernated to this year. Sigh.

      Yeah, doesn’t look good lately

  32. lefty

    May 2, 2014 at 10:04 pm

I agree that other east coast cities fans wouldn’t put up with it Andrew. DC fans just have no clue.

  33. jeff of nova

    May 2, 2014 at 10:05 pm

This team missing a young piece that is exciting and you think will go after it every at bat. Brown is not it he needs to call Joyner to fix his swing

  34. jeff of nova

    May 2, 2014 at 10:11 pm

Ruiz Asche Nix/Galvis then the top let’s all bow our heads and pray…

    God I hate Ray Knight

  35. lefty

    May 2, 2014 at 10:16 pm

Yeah Jeff, it’s comforting to know we have Galvis and Nix on the bench.

  36. Andrew from Waldorf

    May 2, 2014 at 10:16 pm

Ruiz the best player on this team the last 8 years.

    Bar none.

And Id rather have Werth and his contract over every single one of Rubens big deals.

Bob Carpenter doesn’t even remotely understand the sport at all.

Its like hes never seen a game

  37. lefty

    May 2, 2014 at 10:17 pm

    Why didn’t he slide???

  38. Andrew from Waldorf

    May 2, 2014 at 10:18 pm

    Galvis hitting .033

Someone give him some magic pills

  39. jeff of nova

    May 2, 2014 at 10:18 pm

What a bad play for ruiz

  40. Andrew from Waldorf

    May 2, 2014 at 10:19 pm

    LOL
    Slide?

    He might hurt himself lolol

Cant fault Ruiz though hes entitled. Wish he had been up with runners on first and second no outs instead of Howard.

This is just a butally poor team that is poorly constructed.

  41. jeff of nova

    May 2, 2014 at 10:23 pm

I mean all I have to say is this one is on the lack of options we have after Lee. RAJ has killed this team. He did absolutely nothing to fix the pen….forget the big contracts, if we are in it to win it with this core he need to add solid bullpen arms not pray people come back from injury or the young guys mature over night

  42. Scotty Ingerton

    May 2, 2014 at 10:24 pm

With their thirdbase situation, they basically have a lineup with two pitchers batting.

  43. jeff of nova

    May 2, 2014 at 10:27 pm

Be honest with you Howard got fooled on a good piece of pitching by Mr 4-eyes. Brown should not be hitting 6 Ruiz should

  44. jeff of nova

    May 2, 2014 at 10:28 pm

I know it may be early but let’s bring up Franco, although Asche played well tonight off a very good pitcher

  45. wbramh

    May 3, 2014 at 1:45 am

Well, this is why I wanted to trade Brown and Asche to the Dodgers for Matt Kemp BEFORE the season. started. Now, the Dodgers wouldn’t trade us even up for their 3rd string catcher in single A.
I used to just worry about being stuck with our old guys. Now I fear we’re stuck with the young ones, too.

  46. wbramh

    May 3, 2014 at 1:48 am

The Nats may have a better team than the Phillies this year but their logo sucks.
Somehow, knowing that makes me feel marginally better.

  47. Double Trouble Del

    May 3, 2014 at 10:10 am

I hope that Adams can put some sort of string together so that they can unload him for a bag of balls at the trade deadline. Oh and its still not too early to fire Bob McClure, even Dubee had some success with this staff. It looks to me that there is constant regression with this pen.

  48. c. schreiber

    May 3, 2014 at 8:31 pm

Why oh why do I have to listen to the Nats broadcast crew. Absolutely horrific…always spouting batting average, eras, numbers, numbers, numbers. Over and over same data and the Phillies field is a band box and they hit alot of homers there etc. etc. Of course they forget they also are playing there. THEY REALLY SUCK.
