Rare (if ever?) is the sequel better than the original, so it’s not surprising that 50 year’s later, the Mother’s Day rendition of career win number 100 isn’t quite as dramatic as the Father’s Day perfecto, but 9 outs away, with a good amount of signs from Cole’s outing, who’s complaining.

100 at age 30. Not bad. If is all that offers separation. What a small that’s all. We still may get more drama than we want.

What a painful inning to watch, as Sandberg more than exhausts Hamels against the meat of the Met order. Up to 130 pitches, which isn’t necessarily horrific, but that was all guts that inning. Limited options, for sure.

They played with fire again in the Met 8th. Seemed wise to be open to Papelbon getting a 4 out save, but the Mets are the most adept team at squelching a rally since the Phils. Good job by Hollands to bear down.

Absolutely stand by the Papelbon 4 out save thought when all was said and done. The guy threw 14 pitches Saturday, 7 n Friday. He pitched 3 days in a row in April and threw 45 pitches combined. Next time he says something perceived as stupid, people oughta look back at this time, when neither he, nor as of post game report, any of his teammate have said anything, and credit the guy for keeping his lip zipped. I’d have loved for someone to have asked him if he could have pitched. Had he failed, I don’t know that it would have felt any better, but I don’t see here he doesn’t have 30 pitches you could expect. Perfectly understandable not using Diekman or Adams. Papelbon is a whole different story.

Sandberg said Papelbon had a sore neck.

It’s already comical how they’re out in force yelping about Hamels 133 pitches. Most in 2 years, highest Phillies total in 10, la-dee-da-dee-da.

It matters to a point, but really, the only thing that matters is the stressful 8th, of almost 30 pitches against key Mets, in a tight game. That 1 inning alone is almost the entire basis of challenge which makes Cole’s work before his next start critical. And he should be mature enough to know where to cut back. The extra 30 stressful pitches on top of an already full day’s work is the real story. The rest of the story is for the misguided.

I don’t know where you separate unbelievable from believable, but I know what’s included in unbelievable.

How much more heartbreaking can it get?

And we’re supposed to care/be content if they win the game now? Tough, tough stuff.

Nice job once again, Tony No Dad. He’s been quite bad lately, falling into one of his crappy streaks.
I feel so bad for Cole! It would have been his 100th win and he pitched so very well.
    Totally hideous display by Bastardo.

And then the Phillies go down 1-2-3 in the 10th. Awesome. :^P

Bastard-O Folded up like a six dollar suitcase! I wonder who will pitch next will the Manship be weighing anchor and leaving harbor?

    May 11, 2014 at 5:01 pm

How dare this guy bring in bastardo with a striaght face of expecting success.

  21. Ken Bland

    May 11, 2014 at 5:03 pm

While Bastardo is getting rightfully ripped, it’s worth a mention that on fumes, Hamels worked his way through the same part of the Met lineup that did the damage. A testament to his day.
    Degree of consolation? None.

I’m just thinking about that post yesterday where somebody was complaining that a writer called the Phillies ‘terrible”.
Welll, they are. And so are the Mets. Two terrible teams.

Bastardo is brutal and not an MLB pitcher. Why Sandberg put him in is beyond me. Everyone knew he would blow it.

  30. Jacob Muran

    May 11, 2014 at 5:40 pm

How could anyone continue to give Sandberg a pass??
