Phils Promote Brignac, Giles; Camp Elects Free Agency

Brignac improves the Phillies bench immediately.

The Phillies have added infielder Reid Brignac to their Major League roster today following the demotion last night of Freddy Galvis. Brignac, 28, is a former four-time Baseball America Top 100 prospect and was having a very good year at Triple-A Lehigh Valley (.284/.357/.514 with 5 HR, 3 SB in 128 PA).

The Phillies have also promoted flame-throwing reliever Ken Giles from Double-A Reading to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Giles, 23, has a 1.20 ERA in 15 IP with 29 K v. 5 BB. Heading into the season, Giles was focused on command. This will certainly not be the last we hear of Giles: our minor league insider filmed a segment for an upcoming Phillies Nation TV episode with Giles yesterday. Giles is not on the 40-man roster but it would surprise almost no one if he wore Phillies’ pinstripes before the year is over.

Finally, 38-year old RHP Shawn Camp elected to become a free agent, refusing an assignment with the IronPigs. Camp was replaced on the 25-man roster by RHP Luis Garcia yesterday.

    That’s all awesome news..

Does a corresponding roster move have to be made for Brignac? Or is he taking camps 40 man spot

That is correct, Brignac and Galvis swap roster spots between ML & AAA, while Camp is cut lose, Garcia takes Camp’s spot and Giles takes Garcia’s spot in AAA. Ruf and Martin are also rehabbing so they both could be back up later this month/early June. MA Gonzalez is also pitching so he could be an option in rotation or possibly pen sometime too.

Ruf could be a Mayberry replacement option
Martin a bullpen option (pick a name, any name there)
Gonzalez for Hernandez?? He is likely much further away.

Oh and I could see less playing time for Brown and Revere, while Ruf and Gwynn could gain time in OF at some point.

Brignac isn’t on the 40 man, or wasn’t anyway, if Garcia was still on the 40 then I guess Brignac is taking camps 40 spot

This is little more than swapping a Yugo for an Edsel.
