The Return of Trout

Mike Trout will play in Philadelphia tonight for the first time. Maybe you’ve heard. It’s a pretty special event, seeing that Trout grew up a stone’s throw away in Millville, NJ, rooted for the Phils as a kid, and even attended the Phillies World Series parade in 2008. All good things.

But just keep your eyes peeled tonight. Because Trout is a special talent and Philadelphians don’t get a chance to see him often, unless you pay for MLB.TV or the cable package. But really, you’re seeing him up close.

As you’ll see on Phillies Nation TV tonight, Corey Seidman puts in perspective his mark on the history of the game in such a short time. Only two players – TWO – have a higher WAR through their Age 22 seasons. They’d be Ty Cobb and Ted Williams. That’s legit. And while Trout might be struggling with strikeouts currently, you’d better believe he’ll try to put on a show for the 8,000-plus that will make the trek from his hometown.

I was one who believed Trout should have been the MVP the last two seasons, despite Miguel Cabrera’s Triple Crown assault. Trout is by far the better overall player. That’s obviously in the past. However, he is the future, and he’ll be on display in our own backyard tonight. If you haven’t gotten tickets, do it now. And if you weren’t planning on sitting down to watch, do it. It’ll be worth your time.
