2014 Gameday

Gameday 65: Cubs vs. Phillies

phillies

other

Chicago Cubs (26-38) at Philadelphia Phillies (28-36)

Starting Pitchers:
CHI: Jake Arrieta (1-1, 2.50)
vs.
PHI: Roberto Hernandez (2-4, 4.35)

Time: 7:05, Citizens Bank Park
TV: CSN
Weather: Chance of Thunderstorms, 73
Media: Twitter and Facebook

A Note for Tonight: The Phillies just swept a team with a poor record, and now they face another team who sits in the cellar of their division. The Cubs are the only team in the National League with less wins than the Phillies. A win tonight would give the Phillies a season-high four-game winning streak. Another sweep would be important for Philadelphia, as they need to prove they are better than a last-place caliber team.

Also, Jimmy Rollins is two hits away from passing Mike Schmidt as the Phillies’ all-time leader in hits.

Lineup: Gwynn CF, Rollins SS, Utley 2B, Howard 1B, Byrd RF, Brown LF, Ruiz C, Brignac 3B, Kendrick P

All by myself at the Phillies game. For the third time this year, I couldn’t get anybody to join me at this suckfest.

Per the Cubs TV guys, the Cubs have never won a series at CBP. Let’s get the first one and 4 in row.

They showed the TV guys last night. TMAC looked ridiculous of course. But Moyer looked a lot like John Lennon.

They have given up the 60s theme, because they weren’t getting any offense

The silly things on the scoreboard were about the only thing worth watching tonight. The Phils certainly didn’t provide much entertainment.

And Fernandez was tossed because the umpire was convinced he deliberately plunked Castro in retribution for the HR. To me it looked like Fernandez was really huffing out there and simply lost his grip.

The call was so stupid (and no warning) I started to wonder whether there was an umpire’s strike and I hadn’t heard about it.

Well, at least the Phillies didn’t get shut out by the team with the worst record in the NL

And JRoll tied Schmidty, so that’s another thing that made the game worthwhile.
