Report: Byrd Has Four-Team NTC

Per CSN Philly’s Jim Salisbury, Marlon Byrd has just four teams on his limited no-trade clause: the Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, Tampa Bay Rays, and Toronto Blue Jays. Byrd, who turns 37 in August, leads the Phillies in home runs and slugging percentage and has a guaranteed contract through 2015 at $8 million per season. Byrd has an interesting and, perhaps, dangerous option for 2016 that vests for $8 million if he reaches 600 PA in 2015 or 550 PA in 2015 with a total of 1100 PA in 2014 and 2015 combined.

Salisbury reports that Tampa and Toronto were placed on Byrd’s list because of the way AstroTurf can wear down an older player. Byrd told Salisbury “Those really are things that were just put on at the time being,” when asked about Kansas City and Seattle. Seattle currently holds the AL’s second Wild Card position while Kansas City trails Seattle by a game and a half. Kansas City is also just 5.5 games back of AL Central-leading Detroit.

Seattle may be particularly desperate to execute a trade in lieu of Michael Saunders‘ recent injury and their overall underwhelming outfield performance (.246/.291/.351). Salisbury states that he has more than one source that say Seattle has been monitoring Byrd.

Well, not too quick. I don’t want Ruben making some silly deal without at first actually THINKING about it. Half joking but you know what I mean….Ruben needs to carefully evaluate just exactly what he’s getting back in return. I know it’s always a gamble with these trades, but some of his past ones have been real doozies.

This time he has Wade on his side. Hopefully that means someone has actually been paying attention to other teams’ prospects.

That said, yes, when you have a valuable trade chip, take your time and let them out bid each other for him.

I think if you can land nick franklin or one of there good young pitching prospects for Byrd, you take that deal…. Hell maybe we put a package of Byrd and lee together and salary relief for Franklin and taijuan walker….

That may be wishful thinking though

Move Byrd, Paps, and Lee (if there is strong interest after DL) all for best prospects you can pry loose. Pay some of Paps salary if needed. And since no one in the organization seems to believe in Ruf, include him as a sweetener if necessary. I like him but I’m feeling lonely in that regard.

Keep Utley and Rollins because they put butts in seats (and are still producing) and keep Howard because you have to and because he’s perhaps the best .200 hitter in baseball.

Can’t rebuild in one year but it’s time to start.

    Just my $.02.
