Pat Neshek named lone Phillies all-star

The 2017 Phillies have an all-star. Well, of course they do – every team has to have an all-star, even the team that holds the worst record in baseball by a cool four games.

Anyway, Pat Neshek is the Phils’ lone all-star.

The middle reliever, acquired in a trade during the offseason, has a 1.39 ERA in 32.1 innings. He has struck out 31 and walked four. He’s been very good. He’s a middle reliever.

Congratulations to Neshek.

Reminds me of the time Shane Rawley made the A.S. team. Remember that — how proud we all were? Shane Rawley. OUR Shane Rawley. Making the All Star Team. Those were good times. And now they’re back. I, for one, will be sure to scrapbook this so I can tell the kids one day about the time Pat Neshek made the All Star team. “You mean,” they’ll say in astonishment, “that you saw THE Pat Neshek pitch in the All Star Game?” “Yes,” I’ll reply. Most likely. Assuming that a situation arises in the 5th or 6th inning of the game where the NL is looking to get a lone right-handed hitter out. Otherwise, I’ll at least be able to tell them I saw him introduced on the baseline before he disappeared into the netherworld of the bullpen never to be seen again for the rest of the evening. “Wow,” I’m sure they’ll exclaim. “You saw him doff his cap and everything?” “Yes,” I’ll reply. “And everything.”
