Phillies Minor League Report: Suarez continues to dazzle in Lakewood

I took a week off from the Minor League Report (vacation), but now we have plenty of updates. Plus, Williamsport, the Gulf Coast Phillies and the Dominican teams have all begun play.

In an effort to keep this shorter, I’m changing up the format just a little. I’ll present some highlights in stat form, then give you a quick narrative about other prospects for each club.

LEHIGH VALLEY

Highlights:

  • Scott Kingery: .306/.321/.592, 6 XBH, 13 K, 2 BB, 49 AB
  • Dylan Cozens: .240/.316/.489, 33 XBH, 112 K, 34 BB, 313 AB
  • Tom Eshelman: 78 IP, 1.96 ERA, 52 K, 9 BB
  • Jesen Therrien: 19.2 IP, 1.83 ERA, 18 K, 4 BB
  • Brandon Liebrandt: 17 IP, 2.12 ERA, 16 K, 5 BB

A 3-4 week for the Pigs. At this point we’re waiting for moves in Philadelphia to see any new prospects in the show. Rhys Hoskins is ready but blocked by Tommy Joseph, while Kingery is proving himself capable of triple-A (he also already has four steals), but Cesar Hernandez is still the guy at second base. Eshelman continues to thrive, but don’t expect him until there’s major roster turnover.

READING

Highlights:

  • Carlos Tocci: .309/.372/.412, 20 XBH, 45 K, 23 BB, 301 AB
  • Jiandido Tromp: .300/.348/.534, 34 XBH, 62 K, 18 BB, 253 AB
  • Cole Irvin: 21 IP, 3.00 ERA, 15 K, 7 BB
  • Austin Davis: 29 IP, 2.48 ERA, 28 K, 9 BB

The Fightins’ started the week strong with wins over Richmond, but then they visited Trenton. Ugh. They were swept there and lost two more against Portland going into today. Their all-star break is also this week.

CLEARWATER

Highlights:

  • Herlis Rodriguez: .272/.359/.451, 17 XBH, 39 K, 22 BB, 184 AB
  • Mark Laird: .285/.328/.350, 14 XBH, 39 K, 16 BB, 246 AB
  • Luis Encarnacion: .385/.429/.462, 1 XBH, 5 K, 1 BB, 13 AB
  • Franklyn Kilome: 75 IP, 2.64 ERA, 65 K, 28 BB

Also wasn’t a good week for the Threshers. Encarnacion is off to a nice start; otherwise, stats are as is down in Clearwater. Laird is 24, so he’s a bit old for advanced-A.

LAKEWOOD

Highlights:

A 4-3 week for the BlueClaws, powered – as usual – by pitching. Suarez is having an outstanding season; Sanchez walked someone.

WILLIAMSPORT

Highlights:

  • Adam Haseley: .424/.525/.576, 3 XBH, 6 K, 6 BB, 33 AB
  • Greg Pickett: .375/.390/.571, 7 XBH, 23 K, 2 BB, 56 AB
  • Jhailyn Ortiz: .308/.455/.558, 7 XBH, 13 K, 9 BB
  • Rodolfo Duran: .300/.396/.425, 4 XBH, 11 K, 4 BB
  • Kyle Young: 18.1 IP, 1.47 ERA, 26 K, 5 BB
  • Julian Garcia: 18 IP, 1.50 ERA, 24 K, 5 BB
  • Luis Carrasco: 14 IP, 1.93 ERA, 7 K, 8 BB

This team can hit. The Crosscutters put up a 4-3 week thanks in part to some solid hitting performances (Haseley’s first home run, Pickett, Ortiz).

ROOKIE LEAGUES

Highlights:

  • Keudy Bocio: .417/.471/.500, 1 XBH, 0 K, 3 BB, 12 AB
  • Christian Valerio: .281/.366/.382, 8 XBH, 17 K, 10 BB, 89 AB
  • Edgar Made: .308/.400/.462, 7 XBH, 9 K, 9 BB, 65 AB
  • Juan Mendez: .388/.420/.621, 13 XBH, 11 K, 6 BB, 103 AB
  • Anton Kuznetsov: 7.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 7 K, 1 BB
  • Leonel Aponte: 28.2 IP, 1.57 ERA, 21 K, 6 BB
  • Ramon Rosso: 30.2 IP, 0.59 ERA, 40 K, 8 BB

Again, it’s still early, and these are very noisy leagues, but good signs about Made and Mendez, especially.
