Report: Phillies ‘zeroing in’ on Dusty Wathan for manager

Bob Nightengale, baseball reporter for USA Today, tweeted Wednesday that the Phillies are “zeroing in” on Dusty Wathan for manager of the big-league club.

That’s all the information we have.

Wathan, of course, managed the IronPigs last season (to an 80-62 record). But he’s been in the organization for a long time, managing Williamsport, Lakewood, Clearwater and Reading, as well. He’s the all-time winningest manager in Reading history, and he’s managed just about every player on the expected opening day roster. Moreover, he spent time in the dugout as a member of the coaching staff in September 2017.

Nothing has been confirmed; we’ll update when there’s any more news.

Don’t know much about him other than it seems like he’s been in the organization forever. Hey, why not?

He’d be the best choice. Understands the system and statistical expectations of the new front office, while also close enough to the existing roster to forge solid relationships with them while holding them accountable and understanding their strengths. This is where Larry Bowa and Pete Makannin’s mentorship can help this man be successful.

Seems like a good move. Knowledgeable about players, I think he speaks spanish, a plus. Now if he gets hired hope he can get a knowledgeable staff to help him. Hope Stairs stays with big club.

No surprise. He would be the popular choice with the players and mine too.

I was hoping they’d wait and see about what’s happening with Joe Girardi. But I think Wathan would be a great choice
