Matt Stairs joins Padres staff as hitting coach

stairs-762813.jpgAccording to a report, Matt Stairs will be the hitting coach of the San Diego Padres in 2018.

Stairs, who guided the Phils to a .256/.323/.422 slash in 2017, putting up the 12th most runs of 16 National League teams, was released from his role with the firing of Pete Mackanin as manager; the Phillies didn’t elect to retain him for the future.

The Phils, meanwhile, are whittling down choices for manager and are expected to make an announcement on their decision any day now.

I’m not sure about the rest of you, but it appears the Phillies are looking to get a puppet manager, not a game manager. This could be really bad. All of you that believe sabermetrics are the be all end all; will see what I mean when (the book) isn’t perfectly laid out. It’s already burned Dave Roberts twice in the world series. I guess we’ll just hope for the best…sigh… Go Phillies!

The Phils MAYBE scored a net positive in the exit of Matt Stairs. John Mallee is announced as the new hitting coach, and in a tweet, he thanked teams showing an interest in his talents as a coach, but he chose the Phils because they have an abundance of talent. He’s got an extensive blog, and some interesting testaments from players. Some mind you. How do you feel that Jose Altuve spoke highly of him, which is good. But he also got praise from Chris Carter and Dan Uggla. Funny thing about Uggla is amazingly, as he nosedived from pretty fair hitter to as bad as it gets, like the only pitcher he could toward the end was Doc, but I digress. Carter at least hits homers, I guess.

Mallee on paper looks pretty good. And certainly experienced.

Here’s the link to Mallee’s website, and Dusty Wathan is the new 3rd base coach. So far, seems pretty good on the coaching selections, and we’ll see who the new pitching coach is. At least I assume McClure won’t be back.
