2018 Gameday

Gameday 2018: Reds (2-8) at Phillies (5-5)

Tuesday was fun. Yes the Phillies were threatening to give Homer Bailey his third (seriously) career no-hitter, but then the bats got going. We had key hits, a historic moment, and downright awesome pitching from the awesome ace.

Now the Phillies have an opportunity to both sweep the Reds and climb over .500. Let’s. Do. It.

Gametime: 7:05 p.m.

The lineup:

  1. Hernandez – 2B
  2. Kingery – LF
  3. Herrera – CF
  4. Santana – 1B
  5. Franco – 3B
  6. Williams – RF
  7. Alfaro – C
  8. Pivetta – P
  9. Crawford – SS

Pitchers: Nick Pivetta (1-0, 2.79 ERA) vs. Luis Castillo (0-2, 9.00 ERA)

Not much of a diff- WHOA. WHERE THE F- IS RHYS HOSKINS?

Just kidding. After going 0-for-3 last night with three strikeouts, Hoskins will get a well-timed day off against a righty. Tomorrow is an off day, which means Hoskins gets two days of rest  before the Phillies play 19 games in 20 days. This is good.

It also means another start for Scott Kingery without sacrificing Maikel Franco, J.P. Crawford (who needs to play after last night’s big hit) and Cesar Hernandez (who should get a day off soon, so keep an eye on that).

NOTE: The game is on PHL17 tonight. Which is something we haven’t said in quite a while. Enjoy The Great Entertainer.

Your Gameday Beer: In honor of the PHL17 broadcast, we’re going throwback tonight with Schaefer. You could also grab a Schlitz, or even a PBR. It’s all just swill, but hey, you can have three or four before the first pitching change!

Go Phillies!

Actually, I’m a little blown away by Hoskins getting the night off. He’s played consistently since he was pulled early opening night, and it’s not like I expected him to play all the time, but where I’m blown away comes from this.

As far ahead as 2-3 days before Sunday’s day game, I figured he’d rest maybe even both of Cesar and Santana on Sunday, being a day game after a night game, and with his propensity for resting guys, I guessed he’d give them some time off then. After all, Kingery is a 2B, and Hoskins a 1B, so you’d think they’d play there once in a blue moon, and that seemed like a time to do it. With the early shellacking they put on Miami Saturday, he pulled both Santana and Hernandez early, so I at least suspected a Sunday off wasn’t coming, and it didn’t.

And both played Monday and Tuesday as well.

They’ll get their rest, I’m sure, I just would have expected their first rest sooner. If Hoskins had another ineffective game tonight, I’d have been more inclined to give him a game off, but with tomorrow off, I’m disappointed to lose 4 of the likelier batter at bats they’d have gotten tonight.

Not that Castillo looks like a stopper, and it’d be great to see Pivetta go back to back strong.
