2018 Gameday

Gameday 2018: Phillies (16-12) at Marlins (10-18)

MARLINSP.jpgI didn’t get a gameday post up last night. Honestly, that was a good decision.

Tonight the Phillies look to reverse their recent (mis)fortunes.

Gametime: 7:10 p.m.

The lineup:

  1. Hernandez – 2B
  2. Hoskins – LF
  3. Herrera – CF
  4. Altherr – RF
  5. Santana – 1B
  6. Franco – 3B
  7. Kingery – SS
  8. Alfaro – C
  9. Eflin – P

Pitchers: Zach Eflin (0-0, 0.00 ERA) vs. Jarlin Garcia (1-0, 1.00 ERA)

Zach Eflin makes his 2018 debut for the Phillies; in Lehigh Valley he was decidedly Zach Eflin (4.05 ERA, 15 K, 5 BB).

Your Gameday Beer: Honestly, Sierra Nevada may be the best pound-for-pound brewery in America. Always consistently good. I love Torpedo, one of the great West Coast IPAs at 7.2 percent ABV. Drink this, but not too many if the Phils play like they have recently.

Go Phillies!

It’s getting ugly fast. Unfortunately, there’s no Albies & Acuna in the system to save the day. Not even a Luiz Gohara or Michael Soroka.

Atlanta Braves won again beating the Mets last night with solid pitching. They are only a half game back of the division leading Mets. With Albies and Acuna, the two youngest players in the Majors, leading the way (along with all-star Freddie Freeman), this is the team that is no longer the dark horse contender but one that must be taken seriously. The Braves’ fans will have their “Atlanta Chop” in full swing throughout the season.

It was the Major League debut of Soroka (also 20), and he’s not even considered their best pitching prospect. The Brave’s farm system is stacked, even after losing all those players in the Coppolella scandal.

Not surprisingly, the Phillies are currently last in the NL as far as production from RF (-0.6 WAR) and 14th from SS (-0.3 WAR). Somewhat surprisingly, four NL teams are getting less production from their firstbasemen than the Phillies (11th with a 0.0 WAR).

On the bright side, Phillies’ starters lead the NL with a combined 3.1 WAR. The bullpen is actually pretty good as well (7th in the NL with a 0.9 WAR).

Darvish was hammered again this afternoon. Every time I think that Santana was the worst free agent signing of the winter, I remember the Darvish deal. Yikes.

Eventually somebody is going to have to start hitting besides Hererra and Hernandez, right?
The biggest disappointment to me so far is Hoskins. His numbers are ok, I thought he was capable of being a 40 hr guy.

Santana will hit. I think moving him down in the order was a good idea. At this point, 8th may be the ideal spot. I’m hoping that Gabe is starting to see that not playing people every day; is not actually ideal. Most players do better with playing consistently.
    Go Phillies!

1st sentence good. 2nd sentence, meh, I liked him 2nd, still do. Track record, to my way of thinking powerfully overrules a 25 game stretch in a new league and all the other stuff that time shows SEEMS to have an effect on free agent acquisitions. Most of the time. I’m in the minority on keep him second sentiment. Do not care one bit.

Move him to 8th? Hey look, nothing personal whatsoever, but I love Hogan’s Heroes reruns. Hilarious stuff, well written, Terrific acting. Klink and Schultz crack me up. Kudos. Suggesting 8th outdoes their most hilarious lines.

I’m sure he’ll end up with better numbers by October. It’s almost impossible not to. I just doubt that the numbers he ends up with are going to be worth $20 million a season – especially when it results in playing your “best” prospect out of position for three seasons.
