Gameday 2018: Phillies (17-13) at Nationals (16-16)

(Nationals have won five straight including a sweep of Pittsburgh)

Ah damnit.

Gametime: 7:05 p.m.

The lineup:

  1. Hernandez – 2B
  2. Hoskins – LF
  3. Herrera – CF
  4. Altherr – RF
  5. Santana – 1B
  6. Franco – 3B
  7. Kingery – SS
  8. Alfaro – C
  9. Pivetta – P

Pitchers: Nick Pivetta (1-1, 3.27 ERA) vs. Gio Gonzalez (3-2, 2.67 ERA)

It’s Pivetta Day, as the old curveballer gets a crack at the Nats somewhat healthy lineup. Scott Kingery is apparently healthy and at shortstop.

Your Gameday Beer: It has been a week. Well, for me at least. Time to drown my sorrows in Damnation, a killer beer by killer Russian River. This is big stuff. Hard to get. But if you do, good God. Also like it, in a way, is Matilda by Goose Island. PROST.

Go Phillies!

Any night without Nola or Arrieta on the mound is going to be tough to watch. I’m not sure how much longer the Kingery experience should last.

A nice win on Saturday night. We got to see the good Vinny, and the bullpen is proving to be a real strength of this team. After losing three consecutive series, a win today would be pretty big. Games like this are the reason why Arrieta is here. A tough matchup against Scherzer though.

After cruising through the Phillies and Mets on the road, the Braves get embarrassed in back to back games at home against a very mediocre Giants team. Go figure.

Sunday’s rubber match is against Max Scherzer. Talk about a guy who has performed to his free agent contract, he’s been excellent as a Nat. Naturally, you’re going to have weak(er) spots in the lineup against a guy of his ability, so there’s only so much you can do, and especially with a less than offensive juggernaut the Phils pretty much offer.

Even considering the aforementioned challenge, here’s how the Phils lineup.

Altherr hits cleanup. 0-9 against Max, including 6 K’s.

    Santana bats 5, 3-42 with 1 EBH.

Nick Williams is 2-3 against Scherzer.

That’s all selective mention, but at least with the first 2 names, limited data that it is, it’s a helluva way to lineup the middle of the order.

Strange game, this baseball. Classic pitcher duels often wind up 5-4, 7-2, not the low you’d expect, and with the lineup seemingly week in the middle against Scherzer, you’d think the Nats have an edge.

But there is the most infamous baseball quote ever, from Joaquin Andujar who once upon a time simply said, “yaneverknow.”

Oh well. You can’t be losing games like this if you have hopes of contending. This makes four straight series losses.

Tonite Neris couldn’t hit the broadside of a barn with a cannon.

If I didn’t know better I would argue that the bullpen threw the game.

On May 31 of last season Odubel’s slash line was .216/.262/.326

In games since then he’s gone .325/.374/.529 with an OPS of .903

I feel bad for people who can’t enjoy watching Herrera play for the Phils, just because he does some goofy things from time to time.
