Just read on espn Charlie will not miss any games, the funeral is set for Thurday night and Friday morning. He will leave team after game 5 (which hopefully won't be necessary) and return Friday afternoon before Game 6. they also report that vic will attend grandmothers funeral which will be scheduled for an off day.

I was also one of those guys that wasnt sure if he could handle the 8th. ive always been and huge madson fan, dating back to when he was a young pitcher for the Red Barons. I really thought he would eventually turn into a solid 4-5 starter, but having him be so dominate in the 8th is just a good. Madson has been very unappreciated much of his career but its great to see him get the respect he deserves. Heres to Madson continuing doing what he is doing. YOUR THEN MAN MADSON! KEEP IT UP! 2 down 2 to go! Moyer has two more games left this year in him. Tomorrow and when the time comes the the series we dare not speak of. LETS GO PHILLIES!

Blazing sun across our face, later Dodgers twilight fate Squinting eyes adjust, Phillies grinding at the plate It’s not what we want or the Phillies need It’s playing baseball in October; yes I’m on bended knee Joe Torre folded arms looks stern with Myers’s blasts As they take flight over outreached blue grasps Walking blue relief corpses in line to meet the mound Muttering their words with each hit that the red pin strips crown Time like liquid lead walks as it slowly hoards the day Cheers, moans, smiles abound as each zero is posted to stay Smooth object careens across the infield heads As Flying Hawaiian jumps, and catches, a red letter day The final one standing on higher ground Will he rise up or cause a let down? Strikes and walks which path will he will take? Holding breaths, then one last swing, and a win for our sake

That's a great poem. Wow.

Comment by: Ryk on Madson Is The Phils Go-To Guy:
Ya know, I actually have to agree with Joe Buck and/or Tim McCarver on something. They commented on Madson’s velocity improving of late and suggested it was because he went from a 2+ inning guy to a one-inning set up man. Less fatigue on his arm = stronger = more velocity. So do the Phils sign this guy to a long-term contract, give him another 1-year deal, or let him go to arbitration. I’d lock this guy up. He has shown some incredible progress this year, and I think we have either a stud set up man, or a future closer on our hands. Sign him now and sign him cheap before he realizes his potential and wants tens of millions. (Sorry for the duplicate post - this is in the gameday thread as well - but I figured it would get more views here.)

Comment by: mikemike on Madson Is The Phils Go-To Guy:
They will give him one year deal. no more that's the phillies way. The smart thing is to give him three years with a fourth year opition. His agent will most likely try to see if teams are interested in him as a closer. This would drive up the price, so if now they can sign him to a three million a year deal for three years.

I did love reading Blake say, "I'm tired of hearing this place is a bandbox." It must be discouraging to hear that, hell, anyone should be able to knock it out here.

Comment by: Jamie on Odds And Ends: Manuel, Simers, Gordon, Rally:
Good for you, Rob. I also felt like responding, however it would not have been anywhere close to yours. Also, some profanity may have made its way in there.

Comment by: Griffin on Odds And Ends: Manuel, Simers, Gordon, Rally:
Rob, good for you. I dobut he gets back to you, but thank you for expressing what we all feel. Charlie Manuel is a great man and a great motivator and I'm sorry for ever doubting him. Tom gordon is nothing but pure class. I wish him nothing but the best and I'm glad he's supporting the team (unlike freddy garcia '07). Go phils!

Comment by: dan on Odds And Ends: Manuel, Simers, Gordon, Rally:
I had no idea Charlie had been through so much. I just gained a lot more respect for an already very respected man. Here's hoping he's with this club for many more years.

Comment by: NEPA on Odds And Ends: Manuel, Simers, Gordon, Rally:
Wow, that Lyon article is pretty amazing. I had no idea about all that stuff. On the other hand, Simers continues to write complete trash.

Comment by: Jamie on Odds And Ends: Manuel, Simers, Gordon, Rally:
Yeah, Lyon's article, as well as the other one written about Victorino's loss, were both great pieces. It's nice to see the human side of the journalists once in awhile instead of their incessant rambling and angry hate-filled diatribes when things aren't going the Phillies' way. I hope both Charlie and Vic are able to stay with the team for games 3, 4, and if necessary 5, but I'd certainly understand if they weren't. I am sure the team will rally around them and step up to lead them to victory.

Comment by: G-Man on Odds And Ends: Manuel, Simers, Gordon, Rally:
The Angryville comment from Simmers just refers to passion. He just doesn't understand it because he watches baseball games while drinking his Chi Tea and talking on his stupid cell phone! People don't get the excitement in Philly. When you go to other stadiums, it's boring...like church, or golf. As for Charlie, he's a great man. I've met him over 10 times and each time he talks like we have been friends forever....good man, just hard to understand.

Comment by: Sean on Odds And Ends: Manuel, Simers, Gordon, Rally:
Simmers is an arogant asshole. he wrote an article saying that if the phillies win the NLCS they'll "ruin" prime time tv because no one will care who wins the world series. class act, right there.

Comment by: Rob on Odds And Ends: Manuel, Simers, Gordon, Rally:
I took it upon myself to personally respond to Mr. Simers fantastic article and sent him an email directly. Stay tuned for a response (Although I sincerely doubt the coward would even back himself up) See below. T.J., I often wondered what your initials stood for, but now I'm rather sure of the answer... "Total Junk". Your recent article in the midst of the Dodgers embarrassing performance at Citizens Bank Park Friday afternoon has proved to me that you are just as sore and angry as the phans who make up your ever-so-clever "Angryville, USA". Ask yourself this... if the Dodgers hadn't lost the first two games of this series, do you really think you would have written such a silly article? Your story is total junk. I guess this is what we phans in Philadelphia just have to get used to. This constant stigma that has been attached to us has all but lost meaning nowadays and has turned into nothing more than a silly cop-out for opposing fans to cling to when our Philadelphia teams get the best of them. All in all, my response to your garbage article pleases me. I welcome your disdain. It only proves my sentiments to be true. Dodgers win? Who cares about Philadelphia. Dodgers lose? The phans are angry! Violent! They'll burn the city down! If you want to talk about class, let's not constantly take our anger out on Philly phans. Let's talk about being gracious in defeat. How about this... rather than writing your garbage, why don't you write something memorable and come up with something clever all on your own. That would really be something, but I guess it wouldn't live up to your name. Warmest Regards and Best of Luck in the remaining games of the NLCS. Sincerely, Angryville, USA P.S.. I would challenge you to respond. I look forward to hearing from you.

I like it with the assumption that the "best of luck" is completely sarcastic.

Let take a look at what major american city has hosted the most riots and arson in the last 3 decades. ....Ahem...

Wow, I had no idea all that stuff Charlie had been through. He's a strong man.

Can you bring beer to the thing at Penns Landing? I know it says bring beverages, but can you bring beer?

Comment by: gplad on Victorino Emerging As Star:
Shane, Werth, Hamels, Utley, Madsen, Dobbs, Happ, and Mr. Howard (he could very likely pull out of slump and win us a world championship) ... this young talent at our core gives us a good team for many years to come. As well as going as far as we have already, puts the pressure on the ownership here not to let fan favorites go once Pat Gillik leaves. Maybe after a season like this he would consider staying.

Comment by: GOOSEBUMPS on Victorino Emerging As Star:
Shane needs to stay on this team. He always has the passion and fire and plays to get this team going. When the phils were slumpin he was there doing the job trying to get them going. He will turn a routine infield out into a single. He will turn a single into a double! You see him smiling after catching that ball at the wall, he shows his emotions. HE DOVE INTO THE STANDS LAST YEAR TO TRY TO CATCH A FOUL BALL!! Shane is a great player and will be a great leader too. I just hope the Phils keep him on this team for a very long time because he seems like the glue that keeps these guys together.

Comment by: Gabriel on Victorino Emerging As Star:
here's an argument my friends and i are having, what do you guys think...? rally towels... like em or no? my friends say no, because we cant be as loud with all the waving... i say yes... i've been to probably 60 games in the last 2 years, a small handful of which had the rally towels... i think with the whole crowd goin nuts waving those things they actually yell/cheer louder... and they are way better than thundersticks or cowbells, although 'gotta have more cowbell baby!' comes to mind and makes me laugh

Comment by: Mark on Victorino Emerging As Star:
Stuff happens when you're hot. Who'd have thought -- Myers 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs. And Victorino has been super. Phils win and Vic should get NLCS MVP.

Comment by: Jamie on Victorino Emerging As Star:
I do agree that it would be wise for them to lock Hamels, Victorino, etc. up on long term deals now to save money later. However, you have the Rocco Baldelli factor you have to consider. If you ink them to a long-term deal and buy out their remaining arbitration years and a few free agency years and they get hurt or turn into the second coming of Adam Eaton, then you're on the hook for the entire thing. I'm not saying it's the right move, but this is a business, and I certainly understand the business side of these decisions.
