Randy Wolf Signs with San Diego
Posted by Brian Michael, Sun, December 02, 2007 02:19 PM
Randy Wolf and the Padres have agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $9 million. During the past couple weeks, the Phillies have been hotly pursuing the lefty former Phil, but alas the prodigal son’s return was not meant to be. Wolf decided to stay out on the West Coast in a pitcher-friendly park. He will be back in Philly at least once next season though – the Padres come to town the last week of April.
The signing, which is still contingent on the recouperating Wolf passing a physical, leaves the Phillies still searching for starting pitching. All winter (much like last winter) Pat Gillick and the guys have been preaching the need for pitching. Now that the player at the top of their wish list is taken, where does this leave the team? Admittedly the talent pool is thin but the team does have a few options. There are a few veteran starting pitchers still available through free agency, including Brett Tomko, Tony Armas, Jason Jennings, Matt Clement, Kip Wells, Josh Fogg, and Mark Redman. There are also some trade possibilities like Dontrelle Willis, Erik Bedard, Dan Haren, Joe Blanton, or Johan Santana to noodle with; but it’s unlikely the Phils will give up what is needed to acquire these guys. In reality, the only list of pitchers that the Phils brass will be looking at contains the names Hamels, Myers, Moyer, Kendrick, and Eaton.

Paying $9 million for Wolf is like paying for air; unnecessary and stupid.
Bedard is a high K pitcher that would do really well in red.

I agree with Nick..Erik Bedard seems like the best runner-up in this situation, and I think Burrell would be good trade bait to the Orioles. I however doubt Gillick would trade Burrell unless hes certain of Rowands return. Not to mention Rowands return looks more in our favor everyday since noone seems to want to give Rowand his demanding 5 year contract.

I think Gillick would jump through a flaming brick wall head first if he could get Bedard for Burrell! Bedard is one of the best young pitching prospects in baseball. Burrell is an overpaid LF who is on the downside of his career.
It is not that the Phillies would not give up what it takes to acquire those pitching talents mentioned at the end of the article, they simply don’t have what it takes to compete in those talks. That is the reality.

Anyone read the article of the Phils possibly getting Iguchi to play 3B (phillies.com). Sounds like a great idea, right? Made sense to everyone during the season – except the Phillies.
Now if the Phils weren’t willing to try Iguchi at 3B during the season, b/c he never played 3B before. Why are they considering giving a guy a multi-year contract for someone who has never played there before?
To bad they couldn’t have tried him out during the season to get some sort of idea how he’d play… the only thing that makes sense about all this to me is that it’s the Phils being the Phils.

We better not Tomko, I would rather have Eaton starting than Brett Tomko.
I see no problem with bringing back Iguchi to play third. It would be better than shuffling between Dobbs, Helms, and Bruntlett the whole season. Iguchi would be another great bat to put in the lineup, especially if we do not keep Rowand.

Is it me or is the Phillies front office spending another off-season sitting on its hands while other teams attempt to get quality starters like Santana, Bedard, and Willis? I like the Lidge trade because it moves Myers back to the rotation, but with all the outfielders floating around baseball, I would gladly trade Burrell and yes, even Victorino, to get available arms like Santana and Bedard. The Phils have a chance to take it up a notch this year but not with guys like Adam Eaton in the rotation.

Hi, probably this post is off topic but anyhow, I have gone surfing about your website and it seems truly great. It is obvious you know the topic and you appear fervent about it. I
