Myers Gets Opening Day Nod

Per Scott Lauber, Charlie Manuel has named Brett Myers the Opening Day starter.

When the Phils take on Nationals March 31, it’ll be Myers — not Cole Hamels — taking the hill. Myers was last season’s Game One starter. Manuel said the idea was to set up the rotation for the first three series’ of the year (vs. Washington, at Cincinnati, at Mets).

Lauber pointed out Myers and Hamels would miss the Mets series, but that’s if Hamels starts Game Two. Of course, the Phils could start with a six-man rotation. Which means they’re probably giving Chad Durbin or Kris Benson one of the starts. And that means Hamels will be set to face the Mets at their home opener, which could be against Johan Santana.

UPDATE (11:45 p.m.): David Murphy of the Daily News theorizes the move was more a hat tip to Myers for being a reliable and solid team player and a nod to No. 39 that he’s not losing a starting job because of the Lidge injury. That also seems feasible, as the Opening Day starter role is sometimes more of a symbolic gesture than a strategic move. Charlie Manuel did say the left/right options favor a Myers-Hamels-Kendrick-Moyer-Eaton rotation, so that could also be reasoning.

I don’t really take much seriousness about Opening Day starter, since the rotation changes usually by the end of the second round because of the off days. As we know, Manuel loves alternating lefties and righties in both the batting order and in the pitching staff, so this is a move right up his alley. But Opening Day talk aside, I do hope Manuel has considered Hamels vs. the Mets at Shea.

Also, the exhibition game vs. Florida State was canceled due to a bad rainstorm. Joe Savery will now pitch Thursday against Pittsburgh along with Josh Outman, while Carlos Carrasco will take the mound Friday, also against Pittsburgh.

shit it didnt format right, well u can probably follow.

  3. Fran Says:

hahaha im a little lost there but i was really shocked at this. It has to be a little bit of a blow below the belt to hamels.

I think this move was more out of respect to Myers… letting him start puts him in a good mind frame, after having to switch around from starter to closer and now back again.

  5. NateB Says:

the nod will definately give Myers more to look forward to as a starter (so he forgets about closing for now). i don’t think Hamels really cares. Hamels will be starting opening day for the Phils for the next 20 seasons anyway… that would be awesome.

  6. Julie Says:

I like the move. We know Hamels is going to pitch well because he has the skill and the confidence. Myers has good enough skill, but he is a head case. Hopefully this promotion will instill some confidence in him and put some pressure on him to step up his game. Let’s hope this works out, at least for Kim Myers’ sake.

  7. Sam Says:

Beerleaguer had a really good point…this sets up about 5 marquee pitching math-ups for hamels now, if the calendar works out right. Hamels would square off against Johan at home on april 18th. Later in the month, he would face carlos zambrano then ben sheets. Looks to me like the phillies are giving him the opportunity to win the cy young—media attention from all those wins early in the season would certainly make him the frontrunner.

  8. Rob (PHILS FAN) Says:

Beerleaguer is right… However I dont think the Phillies thought about this. The Phillies wanted to help Brett Myers HUGE Ego. Cole is the best pitcher on this team and has the ability to be the best pitcher to ever dawn a Phight’ns Cap, make him the opening day starter. Also the phillies should sign him to a 3-4 year deal similar to Dan Haren’s contract, buy out the arbitration years

  9. Tim Malcolm Says:

I don’t know how far down the road you can even look with pitcher matchups. If it works out that Hamels gets big opponents, then that’s good for us. But I wouldn’t take huge stock in that theory.
