Myriad Hopefuls To Toe Rubber Against Pirates

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, February 29, 2008 12:32 PM

Today the Phillies take on the Pirates yet again.

JD Durbin makes his first appearance of the spring in the start. He’ll face Ian Snell of the Pirates. After Durbin, it’ll be Shane Youman, Joe Bisenius and JA Happ.

That means it’s money time. “The Real Deal” is trying valiantly to secure the long-man spot in the bullpen; if not, he’s in line to be released, as he’s on his last option. Durbin needs to impress today.

Youman is gunning for the LOOGY spot, and should have the upper hand. Travis Blackley, a LOOGY hopeful, pitched a fine three innings Wednesday, and has gained considerable press for that performance. Fabio Castro, the other major player in the LOOGY race, is yet to pitch.

Bisenius is a dark horse to reach the bullpen, but has a shot nonetheless. He made the team last year out of camp, mainly because of the injury to Freddy Garcia. This time around, he’ll need to do a great job to maybe sneak in as the 25th man.

For Happ, it’s an important Spring. If he performs well, he could be on the 25-man roster. But if he doesn’t, his star could fade for good. Josh Outman’s seesaw performance yesterday improved Happ’s chances at making the club, so he’ll have to throw down the hammer today.

Game time is at 1:05.

So far today, Johan Santana has given up a three-run jack to Juan Gonzalez.

  2. Mike Says:

    That just made my day.

  3. Tim Malcolm Says:

Philles down 4-2. JD Durbin struggled mightly, while Shane Youman doesn’t seem to be an answer, walking four and letting in two in one inning.

    JA Happ, however, did well.

  4. Gavin Says:

I could see Happ making the pen.

  5. Tim Malcolm Says:

His performance today really helped his cause, especially as Youman flounders and Holdzkom didn’t look good. If the Spring ended TODAY (haha), it would be Happ and Blackley joining Lidge, Romero, Gordon, Madson and Durbin in the pen.

  6. Tim Malcolm Says:

Casey Smith homers the winning run, 5-4. Gary Knotts pitched two strong for the win. Smith: Very nice. He was with Anaheim as a 2B/IF guy. Could be an option if Helms is dealt.

  7. Mike Says:

Smith also 3 for 4 total.
Any of these pitchers (Happ, Blackley, etc.) should be gunning for Eaton’s job, not the pen. That’s what I’m hoping.

  8. Paul Says:

    What exactly is LOOGY?

  9. Tim Malcolm Says:

Yeah, Eaton’s job is first up for grabs, but as long as he’s healthy and OK, it’s his still, methinks.

Paul: LOOGY stands for “Left-handed One Out GuY.” Basically it’s the guy who comes in to get one out in a tight situation against a big left-handed hitter, a la Mike Remlinger or what JC Romero should be.

  10. typhoon Says:

Happ, Blackley and Romero? I can’t see the Phils havin three leftys in the bullpen but hey, go with what works. First the Phillies have to figure out how to be able to fit 12 pitchers on the 25 man roster though…

  11. dan Says:

leaving out pitchers, can someone post what they think the position players making the roster would be, including those on the bubble so i can get a full picture?

Oh what I wouldn t give to have been a fly on the wall during this luncheon. Here is Heidi Montag having lunch with Meghan McCain, who is none other than the daughter of Republican Presidential Candidate John McCain. And yes, Heidi is boring as usual with her straight blonde locks that never change. Meghan of course does not have the most inspiring hairstyle, but when your dad is running for President of the United States, fading into the background is much more requisite than standing out amongst the crowd. Heidi dressed as conservative as even she could I suppose, and styled her hair in the same boring style with the flat iron and the side part. One would think that if you are somewhat of a starlet and are going to be seen with the daughter of a Presidential candidate you might make more of an effort. However, maybe Heidi doesn t even understand the whole Presidential thing who knows! Shake it up Heidi! Her hairstyle is getting as about as boring as her storyline.
