Payroll Crosses $100M Barrier; Phils Set To Face Bucs

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, February 28, 2008 12:18 PM

The Phillies payroll will be above $106M in 2008, the largest it’s ever been.

There were ideas the Phils payroll wouldn’t cross the $100M barrier, but now that it has, it’s going to be difficult to turn back. Ryan Howard will ask for even more money in 2009, while Cole Hamels will be pushing for his extension as arbitration lingers.

It’s nice to see the Phillies payroll is now over the $100M barrier, but monetary values aren’t the whole story. It’s about the quality you get with the money you spend; for the most part, I think the Phils do a good job with getting quality and not spending ludicrous amounts of money.

Imagine spending $70M+ for JD Drew, like the Red Sox last year? Though the Sox won the World Series, did Drew and his mounds of money have a lot to do with it?

I’m all for the Phillies spending on players, because usually, it’s the spenders that win games (Yankees, Red Sox, Mets, Dodgers, Tigers). Still, there’s something to be said about spending wisely, and I for one think the Phillies do that well.

Today the Phillies play the Pirates in game two of the Grapefruit League set.

Pitchers: Kyle Kendrick, Joe Savery, Josh Outman, Francisco Rosario, Lincoln Holdzkom.

Five pitchers means we won’t get to see much of all of them, but the important one here has to be Holdzkom. Like Blackley yesterday, Holdzkom will have to impress. Remember, Rule V players are on the 25-man roster the entire year or they’re released. It’s imperative for Holdzkom — a sinkerballer from the Sox organization — to perform well.

Savery and Outman will be interesting to watch, but not much is riding on their outings. Rosario, however, will have to perform well. A right-handed relief spot is seemingly up for grabs, and he could be the favorite with a strong outing today. If he doesn’t make the team, he has to be let go, as he’s out of options.

Game time is at 1:05.

Is anyone else trying to listen to the game online? MLB Audio appears to be undergoing “maintenance”…such crap.

  2. Tim Malcolm Says:

I have the box score going. Kendrick has pitched three innings, giving up a home run to Adam LaRoche. It’s 1-0. Kendrick has given up three hits over three (par for the course). Feliz (batting 1.000, still) has the only Phillies hit.

  3. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Third inning:

    Dobbs single.
    Ruiz double.
    Rollins groundout SCORES DOBBS. 1-1.
    Taguchi walk.
    Utley double SCORES RUIZ. 2-1.
Howard home run SCORES TAGUCHI, UTLEY, HOWARD. 5-1.

  4. Mike Says:

lookin forward to Savery gettin on the hill. i really like this kid.

  5. Tim Malcolm Says:

Joe Savery came in for the fourth and got massacred. 6-5 Pirates.

If there’s anyone you don’t mind getting lit up, I’d say it’s Savery. He has a long way to go.

  6. Mike Says:

Yeah I saw that just as I submitted my last post. Oh well, Outman is the next intriguing pitcher to take the hill.

  7. Brian Says:

Ahh came back late from lunch to learn that the game is not on 1210… and mlb.com is all messed up. So Savery gets rocked huh, grrrreat.

  8. Rob Says:

He is 22, he needs more time. I agree with Tim, he was gonna start in Lakewood anyway. OUTMAN is a pretty badass last name for a pitcher.

  9. Mike Says:

Interesting to note: It says the wind is 30 MPH in the game today, blowing out to RF.

  10. Mike Says:

    MLB.com Audio is working again.

  11. Giuliano Says:

In another interesting tidbit…Met’s getting smoked by St. Louis!

  12. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Update:

Francisco Rosario pitched two innings, giving up a run and striking out two. Looks the same as last year.

Josh Outman couldn’t get his two full innings, giving up four earned. Not a good sign.

Lincoln Holdzkom is in now; he walked a hitter and let in an inherited run. Eh.

  13. Tim Malcolm Says:

Check that: Holdzkom has given up two walks and a hit in two-thirds. Yuck.

  14. Mike Says:

Blackley is looking better and better.

  15. Tim Malcolm Says:

Holdzkom finished with three walks over one in two-thirds. That’s not a good walk ratio against the Pittsburgh jobbers. Blackley is looking better and better, but remember, Holdzkom is more a relief option.

  16. Dan Says:

Any chance Blackley could win up in the pen this year or anytime in the future?

  17. typhoon Says:

^Charlie Manuel said that Blackley had a 50-50 chance of being in the rotation or the bullpen. If Eaton/Chad Durbin pitch well and Benson progresses well Blackley would probably be in the bullpen. If that happen I wouldn’t be surprised if Blackely did see some starts later in the season anyway.

  19. Phillies=2nd Place Says:

Mets add Johan Santana and your big move is a one-legged emotionally crippled Brad Lidge. It is absolutely laughable, and you know it. At least you can enjoy the fact that the Giants won the most memorable super bowl of all time. When was the last time a team from Phillie won a championship, was it even in the last 20 years, honestly, I don’t know.

    Leave.
