Braves’ Hampton Leaves With Groin Injury

In what could be a wrench in the Braves pitching staff, Mike Hampton left today’s Spring Training game with a strained right groin. From Jayson Stark:

“He has been sidelined with injuries to his shoulder, elbow and leg, but was penciled in for a spot in the rotation entering this spring. The Braves said his latest injury is a mild strain that isn’t believed to be serious. He is day to day and will continue to be evaluated.”

I’m sure the Braves know they have to be cautious with Hampton, who hasn’t thrown since 2005. He could either be a very effective back-end starter or an oft-injured waste of money. Sounds like someone we know.

Of course, Hampton has had success in the past.

GAME UPDATE: Cole Hamels gave up three runs in the third inning against the Rays. He was going fine until that point. Fabio Castro then picked up the ball and ran with it well, going three scoreless. Carlos Carrasco has since come in, and gave up two runs on two hits and a walk. And to me, that’s great news — the last thing I want is for him to be rushed because of an 0.00 ERA spring. The Phillies got their first run via a Pat Burrell RBI double. It’s 5-1 Rays.
