Eaton Solid In Phils Win

Yesterday, Adam Eaton took another big step to securing the fifth starter role for good, giving up one run on four hits in 5.1 innings. He struck our four and walked none.
The Phillies beat the Twins 3-2 on Carlos Ruiz’s ninth inning sacrifice fly. Vic Darensbourg recorded the save.
Eaton looks to have wrapped up the fifth starter spot, despite struggling mightily to open the spring … and all of 2007. Just a reminder, however: Eaton has pitched well … but just against the Twins. Let’s see how he does against other teams — teams we’ll actually play in 2008.
The offense didn’t do much, again, but Shane Victorino hit an RBI triple. Also pitching, JC Romero gave up a run in over an inning, and Ryan Madson pitched a scoreless eighth.
What we got out of this game:
- Adam Eaton is damn close to cleaning up his mess.
- Vic Darensbourg might very well snap up a roster spot.
- That offense needs more pick-me-up.
Today it’s the Tigers in town for a 1:05 p.m. game. Chad Durbin is on the mound, and I’m on the lawn! I’ll give you a full recap after the game!

Tim, I’m as happy as anyone to see Eaton pitch well. But I wonder if you aren’t being a little too optimistic in saying that he’s “damn close to cleaning up his mess.” (You sipping too many fruity rum drinks down there?!?!) If he returns to pre-Phillies form, that’s wonderful. But it’s been more than a year since then, and two outings — while giving me hope — don’t erase a season of abject failure.
The team says Benson won’t be ready ’til June 1 or so. That gives Eaton two months of real game work to prove himself. As far as I’m concerned, his last two outings have not been outright redemption. He’s pitched his way into the fifth-starter spot, and that’s all. He’s a long way from inspiring my confidence or keeping a starting pitching job.
Hope you’re enjoying yourself down there.

Lewis: When I said “damn close to cleaning up his mess,” I meant his “spring” mess. Certainly we’ll need a couple months of solid 6 IP, 2-3 ER pitching before we can say he’s redeemed himself. But I like how you think I’ve been sipping too much sauce (forgive the pun on your own name) down here — I’m damn close to being at that point.
Anyhow, hopefully Eaton will show himself to be a solid 6 IP guy; if not, of course, he hasn’t made up for his struggles before. It will take months. But for now, it’s good to see two consecutive good starts.
