Phillies Claim RHP Lahey, IF Woodward

The Phillies today claimed RHP Tim Lahey off waivers. They also grabbed IF Chris Woodward.

To make room, they outrighted Chris Snelling, Ray Olmedo and JD Durbin to AAA Lehigh Valley. (I suppose Durbin wasn’t waived, or he wasn’t taken by anybody.)

Lahey, 26, wasn’t terrible ascending the ranks to AAA Rochester last year. His K/9 rate diminished considerably each season while in the Twins farm system. He was picked up first in the Rule V draft by the Rays, then sold to the Cubs. This spring with Chicago, he went 0-1 with a 6.55 ERA in 11 innings. He walked eight and struck out seven. He started strong then fizzled, making him vulnerable to the cut.

Lahey is just another righty arm that the Phils hope will make sense early on in the season. With Snelling going to Lehigh Valley, Wes Helms becomes the final hitter (for now), and Lahey joins the bullpen as the 25th man. He’ll likely be given an audition until Francisco Rosario is ready to return.

Woodward, 31, is a veteran who was in camp with the Yankees. He tried to make better on his .199 clip in 2007. Career, he is a .243 hitter with 33 home runs and 186 RBI. He obviously didn’t make the Yankees.

Woodward will probably start the season in Lehigh Valley, as Eric Bruntlett is blocking his path. But he offers an option if Helms gets traded. He also gives Lehigh Valley another passable bat.

The current 25-man roster, as it stands:

Carlos Ruiz
Chris Coste
Ryan Howard
Chase Utley
Pedro Feliz
Jimmy Rollins
Eric Bruntlett
Wes Helms
Greg Dobbs
Pat Burrell
Shane Victorino
Geoff Jenkins
Jayson Werth
So Taguchi

Cole Hamels
Brett Myers
Jamie Moyer
Kyle Kendrick
Adam Eaton
Chad Durbin
Tim Lahey
Clay Condrey
Ryan Madson
JC Romero
Tom Gordon

We’re waiting on where Woodward goes; that will determine Helms’ fate, as well.

To be frank, I don’t understand either of these moves. If anything, we need a good, veteran arm for the bullpen, not this Rule V junk. And Woodward is coming into a position of strength. Infield is not the priority.

Seems to me like Lahey is a stopgap for the time being. I imagine this is directly as a result of Eaton’s final flop in Florida: his days are numbered on the elite 25. It also looks like we’re going to give last years franchise record number of pitchers a run for its money. Our two major acquisitions are on the DL and lord knows what’s going on with Kendrick.

Who knows… who the hell knows.

Oh, and it would be sweet if anyone other than Howard could hit the ball.

  2. Bobby Wallingford Says:

Since when has this management consistently made moves that made sense? Now we’ll never know if Drew Carpenter could have been an instant answer to pitching prayers.

  3. Lewisauce Says:

Tim Lahey? Why do I get the sense his name is basically synonymous with Joe Table, Gas-Can Geary and Aaron Flotsam? (And, considering the Phils could use a righty, what is Gas-Can up to these days, anyway?)

So this dude failed in Chi-town. Is he really any better than the guys who failed in our own spring training?

  4. Gavin Says:

I truely dont understand the reluctance to bring up some of their OWN fucking young pitchers and give them a chance to pitch to big league hitters out of the pen….ala Joba Chamberlain and Hughes. Why are they so scared. My guess is the whole Gavin Floyd mental collapse…..but I mean thats one damn guy.

  5. Rob Says:

I agree with Gavin, if the reason they do not bring them up is because they dont want to hurt them mentally, then they shouldnt be in baseball. To win in Baseball you need the ability to overcome adversity. Also along with Gavin FLoyd, i am thinking Brandon Duckworth is in there as a flop also.

  6. Bobby Wallingford Says:

Mike Grace, Matt Beech, Carlton Loewer, the list goes on. Makes you wonder if there’s something wrong with this organization’s pitching development philosophy and if Cole Hamels and Brett Myers are exceptions to the rule, NOT the rule itself…

Uh, yeah he didn’t find a spot in Chicago’s pen because the Chicago bullpen is significantly better than Philly’s.

  8. typhoon Says:

Woodward was signed to replace Ray Olmedo would refused the assignment to AAA Lehigh Valley and became a free agent. Woodward will probably play at AAA and his fate doesn’t have much to do with Helms,he is more of a back-up for Bruntlett and will only see time at the big league Phillies if there are injuries or possibly as a September call-up.

  9. Gavin Says:

Gosh…..I sure am glad we didn’ go out on a limb and sign Lohse for 1 year 4 mill.
