Gameday: Astros (6-9) At Phillies (7-8)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, April 17, 2008 11:00 AM

Kyle Kendrick showed us he does not yet belong in Japan, but the offense sure as heck looked like it. They sputtered to the tune of one run against a blazing Roy Oswalt in a 2-1 loss.

Brett Myers takes the hill today and he’ll be joined by mediocre metal band Drowning Pool, who met him before the game. Myers hopes to duplicate the success of his last start, when he threw eight solid innings against the Cubs. Yet again, Jimmy Rollins is out, and Charlie Manuel will have to piecemeal a lineup together. So Taguchi will be the leadoff man this time.

Phillies: Brett Myers (1-1), 5.00 ERA
Astros: Brandon Backe (1-1), 2.25 ERA

Gametime: 1:05 p.m.
Weather: 70 degrees, sunny
Lineup: Taguchi/Dobbs/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Coste/Bruntlett/Myers

Your gameday beer: Looks like the Phillies are in must-win mode again, with the Mets coming in for a big three-game set this weekend. With good pitching on the hill this fine spring day, I like turning to my white ales. Go with Bud’s answer to Blue Moon: Shock Top. If anything, the logo looks like Myers in a weird way. Eat a nice spring salad with this one and let’s get some runs!

Go Phillies!

  1. Tim Malcolm Says:

Instead of subbing out the lifeless Geoff Jenkins for So Taguchi, he subs out Jayson Werth, an OBP machine who we need if we’re going to try and score more runs. Ugh.

  2. Paul Says:

This makes no sense… Werth should be starting every game while Victorino is out.

  3. Gnomicide Says:

Werth should be starting every game, period.

  4. Rob Cowie Says:

Phillies Nation looks great on my web brower on my phone. Loads quick with HTML hot links to every post. I wonder who’s idea it was to do this?

  5. Geoff Says:

Everytime they Put Jayson Werth in, just like last year, he makes a strong case that he can be a solid everyday player. Hes a very solid player, sound defensively, and continues to get on base. If anybody needs to be platooned out its victorino when hes the everyday CF because lastely his hitting has been a liability. With victorino out, the idea that jayson werth isnt automatically in CF today is outrageous.

  6. Geoff Says:

They cited phillies nation in MLBTR the other day, posting a link to the ryan howard thread.

  7. Mike W. Says:

And steve smith continues to be the worst 3B coach in the majors!

  8. Tim Malcolm Says:

Geoff: Yeah, I saw it — thanks. It was great getting that little nod.

Meanwhile, the offense is working again (it’s probably just the weather, for all we know).

  9. chris m Says:

howard is the liability…he has picked it up lately but comon

  10. Mike W. Says:

this should be 7-0 right now or so. that myers baserunning (or was it steve smith again?) was atrocious.

  11. chris m Says:

it should be over by now…what a disgrace how were not capitolizing

  12. chris m Says:

plus im sick of seeing these stupid obama commercials.hes a a disgrace too

  13. Julie Says:

I wasn’t able to watch the beginning of the game, so I just checked the box score. It says Burrell got an infield single?!? Really? Did he leg it out? I was suddenly brought back to reality when I read that he got thrown out at the plate. Sounds more like him.

  14. Tim Malcolm Says:

How is this a disgrace? Geez, they score 1 last night and they score 4 in the first three innings – calm down, kids.

  15. chris m Says:

well when you have basesloaded 1 out and dont score then have 2nd and 3rd no outs and cant score i consider that a disgrace…

  16. chris m Says:

good teams score in those positions and jump on those errors

  17. Tim Malcolm Says:

This is true – I guess I’m coming off yesterday and breathing a sigh so far.

  18. Brian Michael Says:

    ding dong utley!

  19. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Chris: Happy? :)

  20. chris m Says:

    now im happy

  21. chris m Says:

but still it should be 10-1….but im not going to get picky lol

  22. Mike W. Says:

Yeah taht makes up for a lot so far. Utley has one off the wall (for a single, thanks myers) and now an HR.

And Taguchi and Dobbs are both professional hitters. Taguchi should be playing more for jenkins and batting 2nd.

  23. chris m Says:

taguchi has had a lot of good at bats this season…hitting the ball hard and being patience…i like a lot

  24. chris m Says:

another good situational at bat by bruntlett…0-2 with a man on 3rd and less then 2 outs

  25. Mike W. Says:

    yup. he is just TERRIBLE.

we should have put rollins on DL and then brought up the AA stud at SS.

at least when rollins comes back we get TONS better. wow, what a difference it will make.

  26. chris m Says:

its nice to see our pitcher having better at bats then our starting SS

  27. Tim Malcolm Says:

Remember, we knew Bruntlett wasn’t good for offense.

  28. mick Says:

I wish somebody would sit Brett Myers down and explain to him that yes ,he can actually help himself with his bat. How about choking up a bit, taking a nice easy swing and perhaps putting the ball in play. These home run cuts are crazy for a guy who will see alot of runners out there as long as he gives us 200 or so innings. He is a disaster at the plate. Come on Charlie–talk to him

  29. Brian Michael Says:

did he just say “Flyers working with a 5 run lead”?

  30. Mike W. Says:

    There we go RyHo.

  31. Tim Malcolm Says:

    MACHINE

  32. Geoff Says:

Wow, they rocked brandon backe pretty hard. Maybe they cant hit when its cold outside or something. When they face good pitching they usually clam up too. Fortunately there arent that many good starting pitchers.

  33. Geoff Says:

Villareal just got smoked too. Nice to see the bats come alive.

  34. chris m Says:

tim whats going on with the chat room…it would defintaly put philliesnation on top of beerleaguer if its not already

  35. Brian Michael Says:

I’m working on the chat room. I have some basic technology that would work, I’m just trying to figure out the best place to put it.

The thing is though a chat room would decrease the number of pageviews which would make the site less popular to advertisers. Not that selling ads is a priority here, but it does help to subsidize bus trips and giveaways. Speaking of which, has everyone signed up for a free PS3 game? http://www.philliesnation.com/free-play-station-3-game-signup/

Chris Coste rules!!! 10-1….now you happy chris?

  36. Mike W. Says:

    Here’s what angers me:

I have not heard ONE good reason why Coste/Ruiz should be a 50/50 split. Coste hits A TON better, and he throws out runners just as well!!

The only thing that Ruiz does better is block balls behind the plate.

We could really use Coste’s offense with JRoll out, as I noted a few days ago.

  37. Mike W. Says:

*that should read i haven’t heard any reason why Coste/Ruiz should NOT be a 50/50 split.

  38. chris.I Says:

Whats the word on Rollins? I haven’t heard anything in a few days. Anyone who knows anything, it would be very appreciated. Thanks

  39. Geoff Says:

I am wondering, what is wrong with Cardenas that he cant be put as a reserve SS/2B so we dont have to deal with bruntlett? oh no, thats right, THEY dont want to start his service time clock so they dont have to pay him and real money for like 10 years.

  40. Mike W. Says:

Is’nt Jason Donald WAY WAY closer to coming up than playing than Cardenas??

Leave cardenas alone for a while, I think he needs a lot more time.

  41. Tim Malcolm Says:

chris: Rollins is in Oakland at a family funeral. He’s coming back on the red eye Friday night and will be available Saturday.

That said, it doesn’t look good that he’ll be returning for Saturday’s game.

  42. Mike W. Says:

    Suggested lineup vs. Santana:

    1. Werth CF
    2. Taguchi RF
    3. Utley 2B
    4. Burrell LF
    5. Howard 1B
    6. Coste C
    7. Feliz 3B
    8. Hamels P
    9. Bruntlett SS

  43. ryan Says:

when are the phillies going to wake up and make chris coste the everyday starting catcher. he brings a helluva lot more to the team than ruiz. bottom line is ruiz is not an everyday player in the major leagues. he’s a very good 2nd catcher but chris coste has proven himself to be the man for this team. he plays great defense and his bat and his homerun power are absolutely legit. love the way he blocks the plate too.
