Gameday: Mets (9-6) At Phillies (8-9)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, April 19, 2008 01:40 PM

Cole Hamels lost the battle of the league’s best lefties, giving up four earned over seven. And his offense wasn’t much better; only Chase Utley and Greg Dobbs were able to power the offense.

Today it’s Jamie Moyer’s turn, and he must bring forth a solid start. Oliver Perez is the Mets’ starter, and the Phils need to be patient with the usually wild arm.

Mets fans will be in droves at today’s game — for us going, let’s be nice. We can talk when we win today.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (1-0), 5.52 ERA
Mets: Oliver Perez (1-0), 3.38 ERA

Gametime: 3:55 p.m.
TV: Fox
Weather: 78 degrees, partly cloudy
Lineup: Taguchi/Werth/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Feliz/Coste/Bruntlett/Moyer

Your gameday beer: It’s an important game for the Phils, who really need to win this series. So grab an important beer — like a blueberry ale. Important you ask? It’s an important kind of beer because not many brewers try to tackle it (it’s very New England-centric), and so we’re still looking for the standard. That said, Atlantic Brewing Co.’s Bar Harbor Blueberry Ale isn’t a bad choice. It’s mainly a standard amber ale with blueberry tastes lingering. Not great, but not overpowering, and that always helps. Have it with a grilled chicken sandwich and some fries.

Go Phillies!

we really gotta stop giving up runs in the 1st inning

    What a rip off!!!!!!

MLB.TV blacked me out and the Phillies aren’t even on TV in California today. I don’t want to watch the Dodgers-Braves game.

  3. chris m Says:

any way we could send howard and madson in a package deal

  4. KS Says:

Does Howard care? Does he actually make any adjustments at the plate? If he’s not gonna do anything to make it seem like he cares at all about playing in the major leagues (maybe not swinging at every pitch like it’s a fastball), let him sit and stew.

He’s embarrassing to baseball, embarrassing to Philadelphia. These aren’t batting troubles — they’re laziness. You don’t K three times a game three times a week and not do something to change it. He seems like he’s content with his contract and wants out.

  5. RiVLez Says:

i’m a Mets fan and watching Howard makes me sick cause I actually like the guy. I haven’t seen him this horrible ever, he’s just swinging the bat REALLY bad. Some of those swings from Perez pitches looks horrible. I don’t know who is more horrible though, Delgado or Howard? I’d take Howard on my team any day of the week before Delgado. Just like I said in the beginning of the season Phils can be very good but their starting pitching and bullpen are horrible(besides Hamels). They def need to make some moves if they want to be one of the best teams in the NL.

  6. Geoff Says:

Oliver Perez pitched really well. but ryan howard is a disgrace. now they have to wait until he gets better to get rid of him, who knows how long that will take. for now, PLEASE GET HIM OUT OF THE CLEANUP HOLE! Yes they do need to make some moves. TO continually send Moyer out there is a disgrace. Hes horrible, i didnt see his fastball hit 80 at all today, it was like 68 for breaking balls and 78 for fastballs. thats embarrassing. I can go out there and throw 70 somethinig pitches, and ill take less than the 5 mm moyer gets to play. of course those will be wild pitches mostly, but hey its not much worse than what moyer gives you. i want carrasco or happ or someone to come up and take his spot in the rotation permanently. i seriously think moyer is done. he may have 2 or 3 decent starts left in him but by june benson or durbin need to take his spot.

  7. rob Says:

Isn’t it amazing how ‘clutch’ the Mets look, and how much ‘character’ they appear to have, when their pitching gets people out?

  8. Slugwart Says:

Waaaaahh! The Mets pitching is getting people out! They should play like REAL baseball players and… oh, wait… that is how real baseball players play. Waaaaah! The Mets are upbeat and excited when they’re playing well! They should be miserable like everyone even remotely affiated with anything to do with Philadelphia.

Hope y’all drank enough blueberry ale so that it wasn’t too painful. Maybe next time you should pick some fruity drink that isn’t one of colors from the opposing team. I’m sure its not too hard to find some fruity drink made with a red fruit…

  9. rob Says:

    Slugwart,

I’m a Met fan, you dummy.

I was making an observation about how those types of things…character and all that other overemphasized b.s…..matter a lot less when our pitchers aren’t pitching to an 8.00 era (as the Mets did the last 3 weeks of 2007).

Johan Santana doesn’t have more character or clutch ability than Brian Lawerence or Tom Glavine.

    He’s just better.
