Gameday: Phillies (2-2) At Reds (2-2)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, April 05, 2008 11:10 AM

Alright, friends: it’s Adam Eaton time.

The right-hander will make his first start of the year against Aaron Harang and the Reds today at Great American Ball Park. After an 8-4 win, it seems the offense is here for the long run in 2008. Chase Utley and Pat Burrell homered in the win — Utley twice.

Now it’s up to Eaton to prove himself worthy of the fifth starter job. If he doesn’t succeed, be ready for a coup via Chad Durbin.

Phillies: Adam Eaton (0-0), 0.00 ERA
Reds: Aaron Harang (0-1), 3.00 ERA

Gametime: 1:10 p.m.
Weather: 57 degrees, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins/Victorino/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Jenkins/Dobbs/Coste/Eaton

Your gameday beer: It’s a chilly, cloudy Saturday afternoon in Cincinnati. It’s probably high time you broke out the Sierra Nevada India Pale Ale. It’s a strong, but distincly sweet beer with fruity hops and real wheat hidden inside. Taste slowly underneath the smog for some amazing flavor. One of the best beers you’ll ever have, and on a cloudy weekend day, it makes everything all better. Goes well with — well, what else — strong Indian food.

Go Phillies!

I am expecting a huge start today. I don’t know why.

It just seems whenever Adam Eaton is on the potential chopping block, he does well for a game or two to make people second guess him.

  2. Bruce Says:

I have no expectations for Eaton except for the Phillies’ offense to come to the rescue today. ;-)

  3. Tim Malcolm Says:

I’m hoping for 6 IP and 3 ER. A boy can dream, correct?

  4. Daniel aka Embassy Says:

Let the Adam Eaton show begin. Let’s hope the last few games of Spring Training weren’t a fluke. Wishful thinking lol.

  5. Brian Michael Says:

did he just walk the first guy in 4 pitches?

  6. Tim Malcolm Says:

Yes, and none were close. That first run was on him.

  7. Lewisauce Says:

Two innings, two runs given up by Eaton.

Why does he continue to take up valuable roster space that someone else could fill? (And perhaps it’s not even an exaggeration to ask why he continues to breathe valuable oxygen that anyone else on the planet could put to better use.)

  8. Tim Malcolm Says:

I’m not ready to place final judgment on Eaton, but he’s certainly not helping his cause today. Just no control and hittable fastballs.

  9. Geoff Says:

He should be doing worse than he is right now. Bad control but somehow only 2 ER in the 4th. But theres minor league pitchers than can do that, show me the 4th, 5th, and 6th with only 2 ER and Ill be happy.

  10. Tim Malcolm Says:

Well he got through that inning without much wrong …

  11. Geoff Says:

I havent felt comfortable that hecan cruise for a few innings for i cant remember how long, so thats why he gets me irked and its like pitch by pitch here. anything good he gives is an added bonus and makes me feel a bit better.

  12. Geoff Says:

5 innigs and 2 runs is honestly, much much much better than ive come to expect from him. ill take it. if he struggles in the 6th get him outta therte and i wont complain.

  13. Jason Says:

Eaton has made a couple good defensive plays today at least.

  14. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Man, great job by Burrell.

  15. Tim Malcolm Says:

This inning is huge on both ends.

  16. Fran Says:

Burrell MVP. Eaton is going 7 strong today

  17. Tim Malcolm Says:

Dobbs showed why he’s not an everyday guy. Looked just bad against a good pitcher dialing it up.

  18. Tim Malcolm Says:

    Six strong by Eaton! Unreal!

  19. Geoff Says:

Alright Eaton. 6 innings 2 ER is impressive for him. he got away with a homerun ball to griffey that got blown down but ill take it.

  20. Tim Malcolm Says:

HUGE knock by Ryan. Big players come up big in big spots.

  21. Geoff Says:

nice one for the big guy. oh no, i just saw gordon warming up.

  22. Fran Says:

Eaton into the 8th. It’s going to be a good year.

  23. Geoff Says:

left him in one batter too long, but what are you going to do? put gordon in there? youve already used romero a lot.

  24. jake h Says:

exactly, one batter too long. i know he was pitching well, but why test fate like that?

  25. Geoff Says:

good from eaton though for the most part. 7 2/3 3 ER, technically a quality start.

  26. Geoff Says:

    yeah they definitely temped fate

  27. Tim Malcolm Says:

You can’t think Patterson is going to knock one opposite field there. Testing fate or not, it was fine to keep Eaton in there.

  28. Paul Says:

Wow! What a bomb by Howard!

And nice to see Eaton pitch well, if he can go 7+ innings the team should be in good shape.

  29. Fran Says:

He pitched a hell of a game. Now our offence has to step up and put 1 more run on the board

  30. Geoff Says:

im not even upset about the patterson HR. thats a good outing from eaton. tempting fate only because of the season eaton had last yearand his spring training.

  31. Geoff Says:

you just hate to see them waste a good start from eaton.

  32. Tim Malcolm Says:

A loss is bad, for sure, but the Reds gutted it out. Eaton pitched well. They just didn’t quite have it today.

  33. Geoff Says:

    harangs very good.

  34. Fran Says:

harangs good but eaton went pitch to pitch with him. I think that says something

  35. jake h Says:

what does this do for benson? i’m sure eaton will have to pitch one or two more like this, but its definitely getting interesting.

  36. Geoff Says:

It definitely says that Eaton can be the third starter that they expected him to be when they signed him when hes healthy and hitting his marks, but that he doesnt have the consistency to do so. i think benson will be given a start when hes ready to see what he can do and give a break to the rotation (assuming theyre all healthy then) but that hell have to fight for time with eaton assuming eaton is pitching well still and assuming moyer doesnt get rocked too often. I still dont have confidence in moyer, maybe others like him more than i do, but i just refuse to see the wisdom in continuing to send out a 45 year old guy who had a 5 + era last year who you know gets blasted when he is made to throw strikes by the umps. try out carrasco or someone, at least the younger guys can throw hard. unless they really are that much worse than moyer??

  37. Fran Says:

I like moyer, you basically know what your going to get out of him. Yeah the younger guys throw harder, but its not about speed as it is control.

  38. Dan Says:

    Burrell for MVP
