Offense Powers Phils To Series Win

Last April the Phillies were dragging offensively, then the Astros came to town for a makeup game and the Phillies throttled them, 11-4. This year, with the Phils putting up some offensive stinkers lately, the Astros got yet another dose of that big hitting, as the Phils flew by the ‘Stros, 10-2.

It was an all-around slugfest for the offense. Chase Utley homered and drove in two. Ryan Howard homered and drove in two. Pat Burrell homered and drove in two. Chris Coste homered and drove in three. Geoff Jenkins doubled twice and drove in a run. Meanwhile, So Taguchi knocked two hits from the leadoff spot and Greg Dobbs got two hits in the two-hole. They scored early (three in the first) and often (in the third, fourth, sixth and eighth) and ran away with this one.

Brett Myers was strong, going seven easy innings and surrendering a home run to Miguel Tejada and four other hits. He struck out eight and walked one — a second-consecutive quality start.

Clay Condrey let Carlos Lee smash one out in the ninth; other than that, not much else to say. Eric Bruntlett went 0-for-5. Tom Gordon pitched a scoreless eighth.

With Philadelphia in the seventies today, the bats came alive in the daytime heat. A huge win, too, as the Phils can now look ahead to the big Mets series this weekend with a nice two-of-three from the Astros in the rearview.

Just a note to everyone: wear sunscreen, I got smoked at the game today – no good.

I guess doubling twice and driving in a run isn’t quite good enough, as Geoff Jenkins still holds the Steve Jeltz award.

    PAT THE BAT………….MVP

  3. Bill Says:

Clay Condrey needs to be moved off of the Phillies roster. He once again looked shaky and is the sore thumb in that pen. I understand he is the last arm in the pen, but the Phillies could do better!

    Bring on the Mets!

  4. Geoff Says:

As long as they take 2 out of 3 in series and avoid losing streaks theyll befine. Myers seems to have settled down now a little bit. ive been hard on pat burrell over the years but i have to admit hes been on fire since the all star break last year.

  5. OZ Says:

i’m with Mike T. went to the game – great day for it, but got burnt.

Phils bats were on fire. Myers used a lot of pitches & didn’t look crisp most of the innings, but no damage was done.

if i had to find a fault with this game, it was 3rd base coach Steve Smith – sending a slow Burrell home with one out, in the first inning. keep Pat on third, and let the next two batters work him home. i could have hit Backe today….

  6. Mark Says:

I like the way the Phillies starting rotation is rapidly becoming formidable. Pat “the Bat” — Keep on rockin’, ’cause as Blavat used to say, “Baby, you only rock once!!”
