Utley’s 2 Homers Lead Phils Past Reds

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, April 05, 2008 05:04 AM

The offense backed up Kyle Kendrick in his first start of 2008, with Chase Utley — call it Chase-innati —  hitting two home runs en route to a 8-4 win Friday night.

Kendrick scattered four runs and eight hits over his five innings of work — not great, but a yeoman’s effort, as his offense answered the clarion call. Pat Burrell knocked his first homer of the season in the first inning, before Utley hit his two — one in the third and one in the fifth. It was over after that, as Ryan Madson, Rudy Seanez and JC Romero combined for a one hitter in the final four frames.

Basically, a real solid win for the Phils. Starting pitching was shaky, but the offense was on fire and the bullpen did their job in spades. It’s just the right kind of win for a team coming off such a topsy turby first victory of the season.

You-know-who today. After he gives up five runs in the third inning and gets yanked (after about 68 pitches), he’ll tell us after the game that he “felt great” and thought he had “good stuff” but that the other team “have some pretty good hitters who managed to get ahold of a few.”

    Ugh.

Regarding Kendrick, he actually pitched pretty well. He quickly got ahead of many hitters, then got a bit timid. This is something he needs to learn, to continue to go after guys once ahead in the count. Not a bad effort overall. Hope our offense is back in a big way, I have a feeling we will need plenty of it this afternoon!

A Kendrickian effort. As long as the offense backs him up, I’ll take it from the fourth starter spot.
