Benson Pitching In Spring Training Game

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Thu, May 22, 2008 12:37 PM

According to Rotowire (via the Inquiurer), Kris Benson is pitching today in an extended Spring Training game, and will do so again Tuesday. Right now a tentative return date for Benson is somewhere near late-June.

This news is nice to hear, but it won’t change what currently ails the Phillies rotation. It’s essential for Brett Myers to start pitching like a top-tier starter again; once that is taken care of (I still believe it could be possible), the Phils can address the No. 5 starter situation. JA Happ is still my bet to take that role (and soon), but Benson would be a welcome addition if Happ were to fall in a tryout.

Until one of the starters has a major collapse, I can’t see them bringin up Happ after just 10 starts… granted his 3.45 ERA looks great, but Moyer and Kendrick both have winning records… and Eaton was giving us “quality starts” early in the year and looks much better than last year… I just don’t see them making the move to call up Happ unless someone gets rocked their next 3 outings…. Happ just needs to stay on the course he’s on right now, and he’ll be up be the all-star break if that happens

don stop trying to stick up for gillicks signing of eaton…..his preformance is unacceptable if we want to make a championship run

Theyre getting ready to DFA eaton. They reshuffled the rotation. Kendrick is now the 4, Eaton now the 5. He has on eor two more starts, I mean if they actually care about a championship, to fix himself or hell be outta here. theyll bring up happ, maybe bring in a guy like cha sun baek and use him to replace clay condrey. baek, who just got DFA’d (i heard they tried to trade for him in the offeseason), could be a long reliever and help out there. havent seen him pitch much but hes better than clay condrey. also, they really need to make a decision on eaton soon. id give myers more leeway, but not much. id give him 3-5 more starts and if hes not right then i would move him to the pen and try to trade him.

we dont have time to wait for these guys to “fix themselves”. im sorry. i want a championship THIS season from THIS team. we can throw away wins with bad pitching.

Even if my arm is fully healed, you guys need to remember that I am nothing to get too excited about. I’ve only had one good year in my whole career for god’s sake!

  5. Greg V. Says:

I was never excited about Kris Benson and after seeing the results of his bullpen session, I am really not excited.
