Gamenight: Blue Jays (21-22) At Phillies (23-19)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, May 16, 2008 05:40 PM

Fifteen years later, vengeance to be had.

OK, let’s be honest: The 1993 World Series, while a sad time for us then, is more of a distant memory, like a family reunion. Of current Phillies, Jamie Moyer, Tom Gordon and Rudy Seanez were the only players in Major League Baseball in 1993.

Of course, all three could be playing tonight when the Blue Jays and Phils meet. Moyer gets the start in the first Interleague matchup of the season. David Purcey makes his second start of the season for the Jays. The 24-year-old prospect went 4.1 innings, giving up one run on two hits and seven walks against Detroit.

Last year the Phils were one of a very select group of National League teams that fared well against the AL, at 8-7.

There is rain pouring onto Philadelphia tonight, but reports say the game is set to start on time.

Phillies: Jamie Moyer (2-3) 5.02 ERA
Blue Jays: David Purcey (0-0) 2.08 ERA

Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 56 degrees, rain
Lineup: Rollins, Victorino, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Werth, Feliz, Coste, Moyer

Your gamenight beer: We have to go Canadian tonight. We just have to. Some of my friends enjoy Molson Golden. It’s the Canadian Rolling Rock — tastes like piss. Why I wouldn’t normally recommend piss beer, I will tonight, because it’s Friday and you shouldn’t care so much about the quality of your beer. Eat some cocktail shrimp with it.

Go Phillies!

Also, Purcey is a left-hander. That’s four straight. And yes, it does seem as if opposing teams are lining up lefties to face us.

holiday ont he trading blocks is the report…howard and a prospect for holiday…would love it but believe it or not we need pitching…believe me we do. gilick mite still not believe this

  3. Geoff Says:

theyre not going to trade for matt holliday. they dont want to pay they guys they have. theyll cave in on either hamels or howard grudglingly. theyll sign lidge and burrell but not for much. If jamie moyer gives up 4 runs in this inning against this team i dont need to see him on the mound anymore

  4. Geoff Says:

meanwhile. great work by jayson werth.

  5. Justin Says:

Why would we trade for Holliday who’s power numbers drop dramatically on the road? Mind-boggling Phils fans, yikes!

Nice job, by Werth. 8 straight games with a hit for Howard.

Game’s official now. Bring on the rain!

  6. Geoff Says:

Werth! Three dingers IN A ROW

  7. Geoff Says:

this lineup on toronto has some old overpaid junk on it. matt stairs, shannon stewart?…if they didnt have alex rios and some of the pitching they have they would REALLY suck worse than they are sucking in this game.

jayson werth always does stuff thats crazy. he went on a crazy streak last year, gets outfield assists (last year) and then goes and rips three back to back to back tonight

  8. Bill Says:

What a beautiful game. Where was Werth in 1993? Now we just need the Marlins and Braves to lose tonight to make it a perfect night!

ya justin it was more of a joke then anything…moron a little humor in ur life aint a bad thing

  10. Geoff Says:

steady offensive performance, moyer looked a lot more confortable up there with that big lead. guess that makes it easy to record the win on moyers part.

cant complain about this game at all. werth going off on that poor kid was something ill remember for a long time.

  11. Lewisauce Says:

Speaking of that “that poor kid,” the Jays optioned him to AAA immediately following the game. (Actually, it might’ve happened by the fifth inning.) I really do feel bad for the kid. His confidence has to be in the toilet.

Then again, I’m not losing sleep over it. This was a great win. They can keep tossing lefties at us all they want. That simply means Werth gets more PT and Jenkins less — which is fine in my book.

  12. Greg V. Says:

Molson Golden for the gametime beer? How about Mooshead!

  13. Tim Malcolm Says:

Greg - you’ll see Moosehead Sunday.
