Gamenight: Blue Jays (21-23) At Phillies (24-19)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Sat, May 17, 2008 05:08 PM
Three homers. Eight ribbies. Jayson Werth was a beast last night against the Blue Jays, putting together the best game of his career in a 10-3 rout. The right RBI tied a single-game franchise record.
It’ll be much harder for the Phils to win tonight, however, as Adam Eaton takes the hill against the Jays. Eaton went five innings against the Giants Sunday, giving up two runs but letting a lot of baserunners get on, walking five. Eaton needs to put together a strong outing tonight against a bad Blue Jay offense (3.75 runs per game).
AJ Burnett goes for the Jays — he’s been a wash so far and is yet to be injured in 2008, always a plus for Toronto. Werth will get the start, and Geoff Jenkins will rejoin the starting nine tonight, putting Shane Victorino on the pine. It may rain tonight, so we’ll watch for a possible postponement.
Phillies: Adam Eaton (0-1) 5.40 ERA
Blue Jays: AJ Burnett (3-4) 4.94 ERA
Gametime: 7:05 p.m. EST
Weather: 69 degrees, possible storms
Lineup: Rollins, Werth, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Dobbs, Coste, Eaton

Your gamenight beer: Tonight we’re going German, very German. I’m recommending an Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Weizen, which is a very flavorful, complex beer that has a smoky taste. Drink it with some barbecue chicken and baked beans on this rainy Saturday evening.
Go Phillies!

OT: I feel I should offer you all an update on my personal situation. My roommates and I moved into a new home in nearby Colchester, Conn. I finally went back into my old apartment and somehow — miraculously — salvaged the hard drive of my old computer. Huge save. Even better: Our cat, who was missing for almost two weeks, was found alive and healthy. Silver linings abound. Now go Phils!

May 17th, 2008 at 7:14 pm
great defense by burrell, rollins, and coste.. this is what is needed for eaton to be affective.. glad to see the d standing behing their pitcher
May 17th, 2008 at 7:16 pm
Thanks guys.
Good job with the relay. Inglett probably should’ve halted at third.
May 17th, 2008 at 7:30 pm
well, i am glad the bullpen got some rest the last few days

Wow, Werth was a monster! I’m sure the Dodgers are kicking themselves for letter him go. Their loss, our gain!

Wow.
May 17th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
um, I’m at the game and still don’t believe that Eaton just served up a grand slam to Rod Barajas. I bet someone Barajas was going to hit into a double play….
Also, great news Tim. I’m glad all wasn’t lost, especially the cat.
May 17th, 2008 at 7:36 pm
No doubt that was the greatest moment of Rod Barajas’s life.
May 17th, 2008 at 7:38 pm
So is it time to bring up JA Happ?
May 17th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
You could almost see Utley cursing Eaton as he stood up after that diving catch. Chase doesn’t want Adam pitching anymore. I know it.
May 17th, 2008 at 8:10 pm
Man, I can’t believe it — grand slam for… Rod Barajas??????? Get Eaton outta here!!
May 17th, 2008 at 8:11 pm
Marco Scutaro didn’t touch the plate.[/holliday]
May 17th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
yeah it is time to bring up happ. you CANT give up a grand slam to rod barajas. sorry. just cant tolerate that. rod barajas was one of the worst signings ive ever seen the phillies make, and he gets a grand slam.
brett myers has one or two more starts before id move him to the pen and try to trade him. but they wont do that. if you try and trade eaton i have no clue what theyd get for him if anyone would even take him. maybe the yankees would do something stupid and take him on board in exchange for darrell rasner or someone like that, wishful thinking perhaps.
May 17th, 2008 at 8:35 pm
tim brings up a good point. thats why i hated the rockies so much. he didnt touch the plate, they didnt make the playoffs, but the umpires blew it and they come in here and beat us when theyre fraudulently in teh playoffs. that made me sick.
meanwhile burnett looks decent. id give up something reasonable to get him if hes going to be available.
May 17th, 2008 at 8:42 pm
WOW. What a bullshit call.
May 17th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
i decided that ill take burnett. i wonder what theyll ask for in return for him if hes available at the deadline.
May 17th, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Id also need someone else though to stabilize the back of the rotation. and id still try to get joe blanton. i dont care what anyone says, i want to load up on starters for a champoinship run. im sick of not having enough starting pitching.
May 17th, 2008 at 9:14 pm
armando benitez is only out there because he can still throw hard. hes such typical bullpen slop though
May 17th, 2008 at 9:19 pm
a k when it counts j-w! alright!
May 17th, 2008 at 9:24 pm
no chase! dont get hit by a pitch! look who’s behind you!!!!!!!!!!!!!
May 17th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Howard’s going to K up. Calling it right now.
May 17th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
Just as bad - get the ball down, idiot.
May 17th, 2008 at 9:36 pm
dude you are a ridiculous, how can anyone possible complain about a hard line drive out, better chance that is a two rbi double than an out. he hit it right at him. damn man
May 17th, 2008 at 9:53 pm
I’m complaining only because I’m mad we don’t have any pitching. It all comes down to that - no pitching.
Oh there you go, another error by Howard.
May 17th, 2008 at 11:57 pm
Adam Eaton is the worst. How can you possibly that guy play?! Anyone is better than him. Although Kyle is not much better…
May 18th, 2008 at 12:11 am
did anyone other than J-roll come to play tonight?
Burnett didn’t look smooth, but certainly got out after out. keep Eaton & Myers thru May and hope for the best. at that point, bring up Happ, maybe Benson (who i think pitched in Clearwater tonight). hope a sitting is what gets Myers back on track….no clue what to do about Eaton.
Howard might be the worst fielder i have ever seen.
also, were the umps awful tonight or what - for both teams.
May 18th, 2008 at 1:04 am
Im about ready to call for myers to go. if he cant turn it around in the next few starts im going to advocate his ousting. eaton has to go too, id call up happ and give eaton one more start before dfa’ing eaton because noone will give up anything for him. myers can go be someones closer, and well have to trade for a number 2 starter (burnett, blanton, whoever else is out there) to go after cole.
its definite now though. they need TWO more starters to have a shot at the world series championship. myers and eaton look done. so now you need to also find a steady presence at the back of the rotation and they have to hope benson or happ can replace eaton. replacing myers will be hard but he has to go while he still has value. plus, hes an asshole and i dont like him.
i hope for their sake, that kendrick can provide a quality start and get the win.
May 18th, 2008 at 1:08 am
also, how can they not resign hamels, lidge, and burrell now? lidge and burrell to 3 year deals and hamels to 7 or 8 year deal. im sick of it, they have tons of revenue from us and they need to reinvest it into their future stability NOW and not wait. waiting only makes players angry and everyone in mlb is locking up their young talent, to not do that WILL backfire on them. howard it different because hes being a douche and asking for like a rod money. you want that much howard? you can go get it somewhere else and we will reap the benefits of the prospects that we get in return.

In spring training, Tim called Adam Eaton “the total package of failure.” I like that nickname. I’ll be referring to him as The Total Package from now on.
What do you do with Eaton? It doesn’t matter. Feed him to the pigs. Throw him the wolves. DFA. Concrete shoes at the bottom of the Chesapeake. Whatever. Just don’t let him pitch again.
Adam Eaton is the shittiest pitcher I have ever seen.
May 18th, 2008 at 5:28 am
Maybe the Steve Jeltz award could be renamed “The Adam Eaton Award?”
May 18th, 2008 at 9:27 am
Wow when I emerged out of my drunkeness and watched ROD BARAJAS hit two home runs in a sober state, I was still shocked! I think he hit more home runs last night than he did all season for us last year! Yuck! That’s all I can say!
