Gamenight: Giants (13-16) At Phillies (16-13)

Posted by Tim Malcolm, Fri, May 02, 2008 01:35 PM

Look at the National League Eastern Division standings: Yes, Virginia, the Phillies are in first place. Don’t get too happy – it’s only a 0.5-game lead and it’s May 2, but it’s very, very nice to see the Phils started strong enough to reach this position sooner than September 28.

Tonight the Giants come into town, and usually at this time of the year, we’re talking about Barry Bonds. Not no mo’. Now it’s Aaron Rowand. The former center fielder comes back to face the Phils – he’s hitting .324 with two homers and 14 ribbies. A solid year so far, but nothing to pay exuberant amounts of money for.

Phillies: Kyle Kendrick (2-2), 5.13 ERA
Giants: Pat Misch (0-0), 3.00 ERA

Gametime: 7:05 p.m.
Weather: 67 degrees, possible thunderstorm

Lineup: Victorino/Werth/Utley/Howard/Burrell/Feliz/Bruntlett/Ruiz/Kendrick

Your gamenight beer: As San Francisco carries a large Asian population, and as Kendrick is Mr. Almost Japan, let’s go with the regular Japanese treat: Tsingtao. It’s the big boy over there in Japan, and it’s actually a nice beer with no drawbacks. Eat some lo mein with it and party the freakin’ night away.

Go Phillies!

Yes, this is extremely early. My brother’s laptop (the one I’m working off today) is freakin’ colorblind due to his ridiculous formatting tendencies, and I can’t timestamp the post. So go with this one for the next 6, 7, 8, 9 hours.

  2. Jeffrey Says:

    Lo mein is Chinese.

    THE BIG QUESTION SHOULD BE
if the phillies win it all, will we get off from school for the parade on broad street?
i have a case of schmidts beer on ice since the 80’s just ready to be consumed in celebration. it sits on top of this case of billy beer i have saved for drinking if ever a liberal democrat gets elected president again.

    Go Girls’ High!!!

  4. Gavin Says:

I have to say…..the gamenight beer posts keep me coming back. Great idea. Most of these beers I’ve never tried, but I appreciate the thought.

What are you guys (and gals I guess) favorite brews? I’m a ML guy day to day with an occasional Yeunglings. If I go import….I get a Tenents…its an English/Scottish Brew. Absolutely perfect mix of flavor, very slightly sweet….and light enough form summer.

    You guys?

  5. Rosco Says:

I love when EX players come back to Philadelphia. You know what will happen when a Scott Rolen takes the field (regardless of uniform) or an Eric Lindros hits the ice (or the ice hits him)…but what happens when a player like Aaron Rowen comes back? Will the crowd boo, will they cheer, will they be indifferent?

When Ricky Leedee went to the Giants and came back to Philly, the fans gave a nice applause…nothing spectacular but memorable. Then he got on base and Barry Bonds hit a homerun…that’s where the boos set in.

In my life, the only player I have ever seen leave Philly and still get amazing applause the second he steps on the ice is Rod Brind’amour. Rod was a gritty player who left EVERYTHING on the ice. My guess is running face first into the outfield wall will leaving a lasting affect on this town.

Rowen will get applause…and hopefully Kendrick will get the win.

  6. John Blessing Says:

Lo Mein is Chinese, and so is Tsingdao. Nice choice though, reminiscent of Heineken. Sapporo and Kirin Ichiban are two big Japanese beers.

  7. Brian Michael Says:

Yea, Tsingtao is Chinese. But in terms of Asian beers I like, nothing beats an ice cold Sapporo in one of those big silver cans.

  8. Mike W. Says:

It’s not even a question, Rowand will get a standing ovation tonight. There’s not a doubt in my mind. Not sure how you can compare Rowand to Rolen or (are you serious?) Ricky Ledee???

  9. Mike T. Says:

Some days the posts are just hilarious – this is one of those days.

  10. Clare Says:

Well I don’t take anyone who can’t spell the player’s name correctly seriously anyway.

  11. chris.I Says:

Rowand would absolutely get a standing ovation when his name gets called before the game, and his first time up to bat…But after that, he becomes the enemy LoL. I guess he’s like the good guy, gone bad.

  12. Greg Says:

The only excuse for drinking light beer is if you are engaging in a 6+beer “sport-drinking” fest. The low-alcohol and “less-filling!” edge it gives you comes in handy for late night beer-pong matches. That or if you are diabetic…but you probably shouldn’t be drinking beer anyway.
I propose to dispense with this “weight-loss” charade and rename all light beers “sport” and embrace their real functionality in society. Miller “Sport”, Bud “Sport”, Coors “Sport”…etc…etc…

  13. Mike T. Says:

I don’t know if any of you were there, but everyone at CBP gave Geoff Geary a deafening standing ovation after he pitched a scoreless 7th inning for the Astros on April 17th.

  14. Chris C. Says:

Rowand left Philly for a better contract. Yes, Rowand gave 100% day in and day out, but once you leave for moeny, that effort may as well have been 30 years ago. I have a funy feeling he may not get teh same reaction as a middle reliever (Geary) or great utility outfielder (Ledee) who were traded away.

Also, if you remember, Ledee was very upset about leaving the Phills, that is a big reason he was received so well.

  15. Chris C. Says:

Oh yeah, in terms of beer for tonight, I never really liked an Asian beer that I have tried. Probably just stick with domestics for this one.

  16. Mike T. Says:

I was joking about the Geary reaction – but I did actually cheer for him, I like the guy. Above average reliever and a really great person.

  17. Rosco Says:

I don’t want it confused that I was inferring that Rolen and Rowand are in the same league when it comes to respectability…I just find the way the fans react to certain situations fascinating.

  18. dan Says:

If I was going to the game tonight, I’d cheer for Rowand for sure. Fans need to understand that baseball is an industry and players are going to want more money. Anybody would make that choice. But just the sheer memory of Rowand slamming face-first into the center field wall should be enough to make you stand up and clap for him, no matter what team he’s on or why he left.

  19. Geoff Says:

kendrick is like the worst bunter ive ever seen, its almost comical. also..our economy is absolute trash so if youre aaron rowand you take the money. the dollar is junk, you have to get as much as you can while you can get it. if youre in that situation.

  20. Paul Says:

Geoff, I don’t think Rowand took the money because our “economy is absolute trash and the dollar is junk”. He took the money because he was offered a hell of a lot of it!

  21. Jay Says:

    MACHINE!!!!!!!!

  22. Jay Says:

If he (Burrell) is not an All- Star this year we as Phillie phans should be ashamed of ourselves for not voting…..

  23. Mike T. Says:

    THE BAT!!!

  24. Geoff Says:

Yeah he was. thats my reasoning. im sure he wasnt thinking about that because he already was making a lot of money.

speaking of someone who makes a lot of money..what a blast by Pat Burrell!

  25. Tim Malcolm Says:

MAN what a win. I mean, MACHINE what a win.

  26. Josh Says:

Gotta give props to Utley for getting on base as well to set the stage for Pat! Thrilling win!

  27. Paul Says:

Nice win! I watched on the local Giants feed, and it was great to hear the silence from the announcers as Burrell’s laser shot cleared the wall!
