Your gamenight beer: Because Randy Johnson resembles a goose, go with Honker’s Ale by the Goose Island Brewing Co. He’s not the same guy he used to be, so hopefully we can honk his horn to the tune of a few runs.
Go Phillies!

Ever wondered what baseball and slots had in common?

Sorry this is post-first pitch. I’ll flesh this out now. I just got my new computer — well, actually, I found my old computer on my coffee table of my old apartment. Somehow the hard drive made it through, and Apple transfered it to a new computer. And the new one is completely free.
I love Apple. They are heroes.

Does anyone know why diamondback fans hold up signs that say “car” on them in the stands? i think its a mark grace thing, but really have no idea.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
BTW, yet again, Gavin Floyd is gunning for a no hitter. He’s through seven.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
Floyd loses his no-no with one out in the ninth.

May 6th, 2008 at 10:54 pm
eaton just walked randy johnson with the bases loaded. uh oh.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:56 pm
See Manuel’s face when he walked Johnson? No, you couldn’t, because he was hiding it in shame.
May 6th, 2008 at 10:58 pm
eveyone still like eaton? bring on benson for this scrub
May 6th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Looks like good old Eaton has returned
May 6th, 2008 at 10:59 pm
dust of the Jeltzie for Eaton. 3 walks at the bottom of the lineup that all come into score.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
Unbelievable. You walk a pitcher, you get burned. Let’s not get all “Eaton is shit,” because so far he still hasn’t been THAT bad. But this start has quickly turned to shit.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
Yeah they always get rid of good prospects for someone that doesnt work out. i cant remember exactly but wade loved to do that and to trade stars for junk prospects. great…now eaton is starting to struggle. bad, bad, bad start tonight. i keep saying they dont have enough and everybody shrugs it off because theyre over .500. what happens is myers cant be consistent. what happens if kendrick cant establish a consistent pattern? what about moyers age and vulnerablity? if more than one of these things goes wrong they will not be making the playoffs. i need more arms in the mix here before i can start to feel better about the stability of this rotation. i hope they can get eaton back on track. theyre going to need a quality start out of him next time.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
another thing the phillies like to do is refuse to spend like a few extra million on someone they actually need and openly be like, no we have no interest at all.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
Where are Chase and M.V.Pat this series? We absolutely NEED them to keep carrying the team in order to win this series.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:10 pm
well we didnt mind shelling ewt a cool 24 mil for eaton…love ya gillick
May 6th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
trade utley he sucks.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
just jkin….ha love him even more then gillick…hes also carrying my fantasy team
May 6th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
I’m not even going to say anything, I’m just going to bed - this game is an absolute mess.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
What the hell is with the D-Backs and their infatuation of signs in the crowd? They just seem so freakin’ happy-go-lucky out there.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
maybe johnso is ewtta here reall soon and we can have utley back
May 6th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
Wow, pessimists, chill out. We can come back easily.

May 6th, 2008 at 11:24 pm
Can’t deny that…
May 6th, 2008 at 11:29 pm
dont think jenkins could pinch hit…
May 6th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
i love the new dewrag look from howard…really fits him..plus chase looks too patient up there lately. hes taking so many good pitches
May 6th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
i like that move from uncle chuck.let the man chase history….strikeouts that is
May 6th, 2008 at 11:52 pm
not a strike, but that’s what happens when you’re slumping
May 6th, 2008 at 11:55 pm
Why pinch hit Howard for Happy Pete? They both can strike-out just as easily and I like my chances with Happy Pete over Howard right now.
May 6th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Maybe Howard’s swing is hiding in his new cap.

Adam Eaton: reverting to last year’s horrendous form!
May 7th, 2008 at 8:32 am
Eatons next start is the biggest start in his career. Does he bounce back or is he done? That will be key to this rotation. If he falls off the wagon again you have to go out and acquire someone. benson apparently isnt ready yet so they have no choice. but when i said smoke and mirrors the other day thats because their rotation, except hamels because hes abnormal, all has the potential to totally fall off the wagon at any point and suck for like 5 starts. if that happens then its apaprent they have been terribly inadequate in the personnel department. refusing to pay 4.25mm for lohse comes to mind. i need more starters so when one of these guys falls off the wagon you send him to the pen and plug the other guy in. thats what most teams do.
May 7th, 2008 at 9:02 am
Geoff, we’re clearly on the same page. Something has to be done. This is why I said we’re not a good team all along. Good teams have solid pitching, solid defense, and a solid offense. We have one of those three, and it’s not pitching.
Something has to be done about it. They need to acquire a starter somehow - if not, move Durbin to the rotation and add bullpen help. This is why I’ve been so pessimistic - I know we’re capable of blowing 3 games in a row because of our starting pitching. We have Kendrick vs. Owings, and then Myers vs. Webb. Tell me Arizona isn’t the favorite in the next two games, and I’ll call you crazy.
May 7th, 2008 at 9:54 am
You guys need to chill out about our pitching staff and have a little patience. Eaton has one bad outing and you are ready to throw him under the bus just like you continually wait for Moyer to degenerate before your eyes.
No need to panic yet but the Ryan Howard situation is more pathetic then our starting staff and perhaps more urgent.
The answer may be to trade Howard for a truly quality starter—-perhaps a #1 man or #2 starter along with a high minor league pitching prospect.
We could then move Burrell to first base and keep both Jenkins and Werth in the lineup together. Werth needs to be a regular as he is a better player than Victorino with better on base and slugging percentages.
May 7th, 2008 at 10:03 am
Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio: 1) Do you know anything at all about Adam Eaton? 2) You’re not telling us anything new about trading Howard.
May 7th, 2008 at 10:21 am
I am in full agreement about the pitching. Guys, you cant “chill out about the pitching” when youre talking about the phillies. you can “chill out” about the pitching if youre the diamondbacks or the A’s, Blue Jays, White Sox, etc. (Lowest team ERAs in major league baseball)
i dont want to be forced to rely on someone like benson, who could be good but is coming off injury, to save our rotation when it falls apart. im not ready to throw eaton off the edge, because hes done muich better this year, but just have some other plan in place than to have to rely on benson or chad durbin or some call up. those guy scould do fine as fill ins but id rather have a guaranteed guy in there that chews up innings at sub 4.5 era.
if theyre too cheap to do that, then go get somebody else in the bullpen at the LEAST. replacing conrdrey with a good arm like grabow from the pirates or someone like that is the very bare minimum of what they need to do to help their pitching. What they really need is a solid, steady number 2 guy because myers cant do that right now for whatever reason hes way too inconsistent. so add a guy in there without losing one of your 5 rotation arms now and then have too much pitching. have 6-7 starters that you can throw in there. maybe you make two guys alternate starts in the 5th rotation spot for competition. teams do that. i want to have too much pitching not barely enough or not enough. what happens if cole hamels gets hurt again?
May 7th, 2008 at 10:23 am
Though i wouild concur that the howard situation has gotten so bad that its almost or just as urgent as the pitching situation. he looked like he didnt know where he was at last night. and its not piling on the pitching after one bnad outing last night. this has been a problem for YEARS. when they went to the world series their ace was terry mulholland backed up by schiling and co. the one-two punch they have now isnt nearly as good despite how great hamels is.
May 7th, 2008 at 10:26 am
i would LOVE to know which team is going to give up a #1 or #2 pitcher…AND a high pitching prospect for the MLB recrod holder is strikeouts… if there was anything close to that type of offer available, the Phillies would have pulled the trigger on that deal a while ago.
Eaton sucked last night, but besides that start he’s been steady so far this year. Lets see what he does next time out before we make definite judgements…
Moyer looked great the other night. He can, will, and should remain in the rotation for the remainder of the season…he won’t win a CY YOUNG, but he will keep us in just about every game… and when our offense scores runs like they should, Moyer should win more games then he loses. I think Kendrick was a surprise last year, and I really don’t know if he can get it done at this level…
May 7th, 2008 at 10:42 am
Im not saying they have to give up howard for it. but they have to do something. put somebody in your rotation thats better than at least one of your current starters. thats a good baby step to start with. they wont have to give up the farm for a steady 3rd man, though theyll have to give up something decent. thats a ncie, simple thing to start with. ideally, who doesnt want anotehr 1 or a 2. but right now ill settle for an upgrade in the rotation who can give you solid innings and a bullpen arm to boslter that group. tahts not too much to ask for is it? maybe so, but if thats too much to ask for then thats a disgrace. if ryan howard doesnt sign a long-term deal this offseason then you have to move him. he also needs to reconsider his value, hes WAY out of control with those salary demands. anyways, heres hoping kendrick gives a quality start tonight.
May 7th, 2008 at 11:40 am
I’d love to see Eaton eat up innings while keeping his ERA in the low 4’s over his next 24 starts, but his history indicates that he’s not capable of that. And those who ignore history are doomed. Maybe they give him one more start, but seriously, after a full 2007 of garbage, a spring training of garbage, and now a couple garbage starts in a row, why are some of you unwilling to throw out the garbage?
Geoff and I disagree on the worth of Moyer, but I completely agree with Geoff and Mike T. when they express concern about the overall rotation. I’m pretty sure we can make the playoffs. But this is NOT a team that will win a playoff series — or better yet, contend for the world championship — with this rotation. No way.
The question, of course, remains: what now? I say give Chad Durbin a shot at the fifth starter spot. It’s a start.
As for trading Howard for a bona-fide No. 1 or 2 PLUS a top prospect: No team in baseball right now would give up a top-flight pitcher (nevermind the top prospect) for a guy who can’t seem to hit a beach ball and who publicly talks about himself as deserving A-Rod money. (Oh, the irony.) Unless we can sucker somebody, Howard is not going to be a bargaining chip for a pitcher.
Management has to solve the pitching situation without moving Howard. I’m not sure how, but they do.
