Gamenight: Phillies (24-21) At Nationals (19-26)
Posted by Tim Malcolm, Mon, May 19, 2008 05:40 PM
After losing two of three to the lowly Blue Jays, the Phillies need to rebound starting tonight against the Washington Nationals. After these three, it’s four in Houston to face the overachieving Astros. Five of seven is realistic and wanted.
Problem is the Phils face Tim Redding, who threw a complete game two-hitter against the Phils to begin the season. This time the Phils will need to materialize a heck of a lot more offense. Brett Myers, who has performed poorly this season, looks to rebound tonight.
It’s the first time the Phils will play at Nationals Park in Washington, D.C.
Phillies: Brett Myers (2-4) 5.91 ERA
Nationals: Tim Redding (5-3) 3.55 ERA
Gametime: 7:10 p.m. EST
Weather: 65 degrees, partly cloudy
Lineup: Rollins, Werth, Utley, Howard, Burrell, Jenkins, Dobbs, Ruiz, Myers

Your gameday beer: Tonight, grab a RedHook Blonde Ale. It’s citrusy but not too much, and it goes down pretty smooth. To eat, have some pasta tossed in olive oil and mushrooms, topped by formaggio.
Go Phillies!

I’m expecting Myers to show up tonight and prove he belongs in the starting rotation. Now, even though Myers is 7-7 with a 4.91 against the Nats in his career, he had a 0.00 era against them last year in 9 IP, giving up 4 hits and striking out 10.
Expect a big game from Myers, 7 IP, 2 ER and 5 K’s.
Go Phils.

howard is really back…he looks great at the plate. ha. even ahead in the count he sucks

Myers is looking shaky

why isn’t feliz bunting jenkins to third w/ 0 outs! 2x !!!

They better beat this team 2 out of 3. the nationals suck. myers is battling, i still need a few more innings without giving any more runs. for a comeback start, 3 runs through 7 is ok. assuming he can do that. not dominant or acceptable every time out from him, but its better at least providing he can continue this.
tim redding is NOT this good. they need to start hitting here

Why is Feliz even playing? Dobbs would have done something against this guy — even if it was to take some pitches or just move him over so Ruiz could get a sac fly ….. are they really 0-10 with men in scoring position? Is that a record so early in the game?

Tonight’s game is simple - not hitting with RISP. Why do you think this is? Maybe because our offense is overrated - good - but overrated. Just like I’ve been saying since the beginning. Now that I’m right on our offense being overrated, and the pitching being terrible, where are all of the Mike T bashers?

AND that was a disgraceful performance. the nats should have no chance against the phils. tim redding, before this game, was 5-3 with a 3.55 era. thats solid, but certaintly not striking enough to tell me he should SHUT OUT the phillies hyped offense.

we suck….gillick didnt put a COMPLETE winner together no matter what bruce and don m think. period
May 19th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
aganst the nationals, 4 runs is too much but still should be enough to win but not when tim redding shuts them out twice in a row. thats revolting. its time for JA Happ or a trade or something. go get somebody in here that can help us out NOW. the guys that are here need to be doing much better. nobody gets off the hook tonight. that was humiliating and embarrassing to watch even by yourself. i think i would trade shane victorino and a prospect for a starting pitcher and figure out some way to get another outfielder. just a preliminary idea…
May 19th, 2008 at 9:52 pm
they didnt do enough. they should have done all of this stuff in the offseason but here we are again in may having to hope for a trade or a call up to save the starting rotation AGAIN. i hope they do something soon because i think this rotation is falling apart. moyer is a coin toss. kendrick and hamels are usually wins, and myers and eaton are losses now. thats depending on jamie moyer to get you over .500 per rotation cycle. thats not going to cut it.

meanwhile, ANOTHER young red sox pitcher throws a no hitter. farm systems, farm systems
May 19th, 2008 at 10:36 pm
thanks gillick for trading our best young pitchers for garcia w.o a physical…going off on gillick makes me feel better even though its not all his fault
May 19th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
i concur. now floyd isnt the end all be all, but he would certaintly help in the rotation right about now. the phillies team medical personnel need replaced immediately! they fouled up garcia, lieber, rollins, myers, and many others.

we’re all missing the big story. J.D. durbin got demoted from AAA. http://www.mcall.com/sports/all-sp-pigs-051908-cn,0,1253102.story

The problem was not Myers in this one, although he gave up 3 runs. The problem was was a Phillies offense minus a couple of cylinders and which couldn’t push in runs. Myers at least kept the game fairly close.

who’s ready to go down with the sinking ship?
May 20th, 2008 at 8:56 am
Jordan, I’m the captain of that ship. All aboard!!!
May 20th, 2008 at 11:29 am
We have a winning record, it’s still May, and this is the National League. Ship ain’t sinkin’ yet. (Our rotation is atrocious and our offense severely underperforming, yeah, but I’m still hopeful something will happen rotation-wise. The offense, meanwhile, will pick it up at some point.)
